Regardless of the Low-Mode brackets that you may have, ALWAYS have the rental house include one in the camera package. I was recently shooting in San Antonio with a 435 from a Los Angeles rental house and I had my Hill 435 LM bracket, BUT the rental house has made an adapter for the video tap which was about one centimeter higher than most ARRI 435....Needless to say that one centimeter blocked MY Low mode bracket from attaching properly.. A big headache lost time. My two cents Ari Gertler "How come it is a penny for your thoughts but you put your Two cents in?? Someone is making a penny." (S.W.)

I have a great CPA and we discussed this last year. We both figured that it is not worth the risk. If you take the TV with you to the set to use as a monitor then of course you can write it off. If you have it as the center of your entertainment system forget it, BUT if you use it for editing at home (even cutting a new reel) then it is a toss up on the amount of time it will be used for work, not entertainment. I hope this has helped, I will not see any checks from the Gov. for my German HD TV, or for the gym (yes I tried), but I will be able to write off my Netflix charges and enjoy the great picture on my set. Has anyone flown/used the Panavision Elaine (elan)
Ari Gertler replied to Ari Gertler's topic in Cameras (Film/Video/HD)
The Pana Elaine is a fine camera. The weight is nearly perfect (heavy for a 16mm, but the weight of lighter 35's). The power is the large 2 pin alt pana power. The video assist (Woodland Hills) is bright. I had to fly it last time WITH the studio matt-box which was not really a problem, I used the rods for my motors. The only thing that I don't like is that is seems to suck more juice than other 24v. cameras, at least the last time that I used it (although I was only using the back 2 positions on my Pro: for better balance. If I used all 3 batt. positions I may not have needed to change batts. every few take). Nothing to worry about. Ari Gertler -
I used this camera about 5 years ago when I was just starting out as a Steadicam Operator, but have I forgotten all about it.These are basic general questions that would like to be answered: Total and dummy side Weight? VideoTap? Lenses? Should I stay away from this thing? Anything else I should be aware of? Thank you for your responses. Ari Gertler

Are these small cameras able to close focus (1/2 - 2 inches)? Can they be be used in en emergency with a 14p HD camera if the Down Converter craps out. Or for that matter if any video tap craps out? If so, where can they be purchased? Ari Gertler

FRED, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, thanks for making me over 30 great cables with fantastic service over the years...... Ari Gertler

I can't say anything about the service. Four years ago I was in a Rickshaw making a turn when the wheel gave way. Needles to say, as the chair fell on its right side, my rig with an Arri sr3 whipped from my extreme left with great force and speed onto the pavement below. The modulus 3000 was the first piece hit the ground. The lens flew in one direction while the mag popped off and had a tumble. I was a little shaken up and when I took my first look at the Modulus, the cooling coils on the side had bent over, but it has continued to work to this day with no need of repair or modification. The lens though was trashed and the Mag held together and we go the shot. Ari Gertler

I believe I just saw the Rig in question. About 75% of the rig was charred. The only non melted/still intact piece was the Battery module. This has lead me to believe that the Rig and or battery configuration has nothing to do with the fire. Ari Gertler

The issue with any video camera that you can try to convert to a tap is CLOSE FOCUS. All the cheap ccd mini cameras that I have seen can not focus in the 1-3 inch world... Ari Gertler

I know of an operator here in California that has ben working on being able to fly his rig from his Segway. It has never sounded that good to me. Can anyone picture what it must look like, and if it would work well? I have never seen his setup??? Ari Gertler

I have never worked with Gyros before. What are the major benefits and drawbacks (steady vs. noisy?). How often do operators use them. What shots are good/bad? How long do you have to experiment and practice with them until you can find the correct set-up and become skilled? I have tried Antlers about four years ago and while they seemed to help, I couldn't really tell because I was a newbie. Who uses the Antlers, and how usefull are they? Thank you, Ari Gertler

I just wanted to tip my hat to all of the Steadicam Ops at last years Rugby World Cup in Australia. There were some incredible tracking shots, and no rest for 45 minutes is very impressive. The viewer was able to get a real feeling for a game that is non-stop action. Great work to all. Ari Gertler Fan of Rugby (even though I am a Yank).

Fear and loathing in airports
Ari Gertler replied to nick franco's topic in Legal / Business Practices
NEW NEWS: No lighters what so ever will be allowed on planes anymore...... I never had a problem at the airports, but then again the only thing I took as carry on was my vest and arm. In fact I was told that I had too much carry on baggage. I pulled my vest out of the bag and said that I had a bad back and the vest is a custom brace that I could not possibly loose in the luggage. This was all Pre 9-11 and it worked beautifully. All I can really say is get there early just in case........ Ari Gertler -
