  1. I've heard very good things about Greg's class. I'd send you to our workshops site but we're sold out through CineGear 2018. Robert www.stabilizerworkshops.com
  2. What I've done in the past Alfeo is use a pair of super super skinny straight needle nose pliers to pry and stretch clear shrink wrap enough to slide it over the connector. There's a limit to connector size of course but that stuff will stretch quite a bit. Maybe not ARRI power stretch but easy for common Lemos. Once you heat it it goes back to normal shrunken size. Robert
  3. Chris is 100% correct. The pain and swelling in your knee is your body saying it's a no go.
  4. I must have missed it! As always Andrew thanks for your support of The Stabilizer Workshops! It's always great to have you on set with us and of course you know our students love having real cameras, real accessories, actors, scripts and sets and Teradek is a big part of that experience! Thanks! Robert
  5. I don't have migraines but I do have a lot of allergies and see an allergist in LA. She's always asking me if I have migraines and I don't but she insists they are related to allergic reactions. That's all I know but maybe there's some new allergen in your world. Robert
  6. Hit me up Thomas. I have two with the case that have only been used once or twice at most. robert @ westcoaststeadicam
  7. Thank you Janice! I'm not sure if this topic is meant to be exclusive to Long Term Care insurance but here's something else everyone covered by WP Dolle under the group Steadicam policy should know: If you are renting your gear out to others and are not on the job yourself, your equipment is NOT COVERED under Dolle's Steadicam group policy and Dolle does not have a policy to offer that does. After many years and increasing rentals but no claims I had to go elsewhere for my equipment coverage. That policy is a great policy but you need to know the limitations. I can't speak high enough about the great service we had over the years from Tanya at WP Dolle and thankfully we never had a claim. Now, if you're running a good operation and you are always getting a proper COI from your rentors, that's fine as long as you always confirm their policy is active and in force. However, if their insurance declined for some reason you'd be SOL without your own coverage. Robert
  8. It's interesting how we all rally to support our brothers, sisters and the Union (and we should) but for the most part our Union sells us down the river with few exceptions. When do they take a stand for us? I mean a real stand? Do they really support 12 on / 12 off? Do they really support better wages or did the Tier program just give them an opportunity to get a slice of the low hanging fruit? Instead of creating more opportunity for our members to get health care they let it become more difficult to obtain and maintain for the rank and file member. The feedback I've seen online recently makes it sound like the service and services on the plan are not exactly working well for those members. I'm off topic and perhaps off base. Someone please tell me what the union has done and done well for us lately... Now that is off my chest, have a great day! Robert
  9. It is a very minimal amount of sanding on the pin, just take your time.
  10. Set of Six Ultra Prime Lenses 16mm, 24, 32, 50, 85, 135mm These were purchased from Ablecine 23 months ago and I still have all the original boxes and packaging for them. They are in absolutely mint condition. I have individual images as well but I can tell you that they are pristine from every angle. $68,000 USD includes a complete inspection and evaluation by Ablecine. We are selling these as it seems in the Las Vegas market clients want our zooms mostly for run-n-gun type jobs. ** SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY - NO TRADES - SELLING COMPLETE SET ONLY ** If you’d like to move on to the next step in this I can send you all the other photos and of course you are welcome to inspect them. Includes custom case $68,000 USD Thanks for your consideration!
  11. Agreed it's a wonky sort of stand set up but it's what I've been using a long time. At one point Inovative had looked at making some very lightweight 8" wheels but I'm not sure where that went. Earlier this week I stopped in at Matthews looking for a stand more suitable for my Ronin setup. They have a "Runway base" that has low flat legs with smaller wheels. Two of the legs are longer and one is shorter so you can roll it through a door without the wig-wag pattern. I'm not sure how much of a PIA is would be too but it's an option I suppose. Robert
  12. You can't go wrong with Dionic HCs. Dated product??? It's a battery. Snap it on it supplies power, drop it and it won't break unless you really smash it, charge it and use it again. If something goes wrong with it, Anton Bauer has some of the best customer service in the business. The new batteries are fine, they just have a different styling and a voltage readout plus a few other internal functions. They do claim a longer lifetime of charge cycles which is good but the HCs are not short by any means. This is not rocket science and they will last for many years.
  13. $2600 is not too bad of a price if it provides a unique advantage or benefit. Roughly two days kit rental to pay for it as I doubt it's something we can charge extra for.
  14. ** Last Minute Opening ** Advanced Aesthetics and Stabilizer Systems Workshop Five Days - June 8-12, 2015 - Los Angeles (Post CineGear) Real Rigs! Real Cameras! Real Studio Sets! Real Actors! Real Lighting! Real World Training! 2:1 Student to Instructor Ratio Maximum of four students Our rigs or yours Due to an unfortunate family situation / cancellation, we have one very last minute opening in this highly customized workshop . Requirements: 2-3+ years active working on-set experience minimum. This workshop is for owner / operators who already have a solid command of the rig and are at the point that the physical operation of the rig is second nature. While we will certainly offer tips and techniques to refine your operating techniques, there will be no “line dances” unless you want one to warm up on. Our focus is on creative shot design, choreography, interaction with DP, Director, actors, other departments and the use of various stabilizer systems to create the perfect flow, emotion and composition to deliver the scenes. We will incorporate hands-on training with new stabilizer systems and technologies including Ronin to rig and other multi-axis systems. Intensive experience on all aspects of mobile platforms including rickshaws/variants, vehicle mounts and real camera cars! You will also work directly with gaffer and author Craig Burnie Burns of Burnie's Grip and Lighting and his crew during scene design to solve complex lighting challenges you will face in the real world. Four days of this workshop will be held at Silver Dream Factory in Anaheim using custom standing sets that include a hospital, police station and jail, diner restaurant, home interiors, retail shops and a Main Street style backlot. One training day will be a location based. Professional working actors in full wardrobe/makeup with pre-rehearsed scripts are included. Each scene will be choreographed, rehearsed, recorded and reviewed. All footage and stills will be sent to participants within two weeks or less. Bring a drive with you and we will ship it back to you. Lunch and craft services provided. You will leave this workshop with many new skills, new skills on new systems, a heightened awareness and understanding of shot choreography, camera motivation and the ability to offer a higher level of creative solutions to DP’s and Directors. Most importantly you will leave this workshop with the knowledge and confidence that you can meet most any challenge presented to you. Cost: $5,000 USD - Credit cards accepted and I may consider a short split payment plan to qualified individuals. Due to the very short nature of this opening / cancellation please contact me directly at robert@starling.com or via phone at 702-810-5707 - SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE! Thank you!
  15. If you are injured on the job you and the employer would be subject to Workers Compensation rules, processes and guidelines. Robert
  16. Thanks Paul! Vitec / Anton Bauer are always a class act in every way. There are manufacturers and vendors in our profession who could learn from this company and Paul specifically. When the new batteries were announced they listened and responded to our needs; then didn't blame us, tell us to change or grumble about it. They just quietly listened and adapted to respond to our needs. Robert
  17. Knights of the Mirror Finish LED Screen? Welcome Billy! +1 on everything Alec wrote in his post!
  18. Rather than features, it is best to focus on the benefits to you and your operating unless you're purely talking about a nominal convenience item. A vest needs to fit you for comfort and control A vest should disperse the weight properly A vest should allow you control but also generous movement where you need it and only when you need it There are lots of points others can add to this. There are also plenty of manufacturer's claims of features and benefits that are as much gimmick as they are anything else. Robert
  19. Who is coming to our little jewel of the desert called Las Vegas this year for NAB? I'll be at my usual spot for Angenieux lenses Monday - Weds 9-3pm. Come say hi and tell me where all the cool stuff is so I don't have to walk 400 miles through the show! See you there! Robert
  20. Why split the rate for a Movi? Hopefully they're not paying us for "schlep factor" only and are paying for our ability to choreograph and move the camera most of all. The weight is a factor in our fatigue but my guess is you're going to be just as tired or moreso supporting a Movi / Ronin or whatever else we move. Robert
  21. It can only be a few things Nikk: 1. Something on the sled or camera is loose 2. You have flex in your mounting plate(s) 3. The sled or it's parts are flexing structurally 4. Accessories are flexing or vibrating That's about it but there's always another angle or experience someone else here might have. Good luck! Robert
  22. Just in general conversation you can ask them how they got into the business and got into Steadi utility in a non-judgemental way I suppose. That is probably a discussion to have with the Producer before you get on-site first. Everyone including Utilities have to get a start somewhere but there's a time and place for getting started with everything including operating Steadicam. Generally you can assess how they are just in simple things like relocating you, rig and stand to a new location. Are they engaged? Are they attentive? Are they overloaded. Warming up and rehearsals are your next chance to see them at work in a controlled situation. They need to warm up too and sort out their cabling. Again, at this point you're sort of too late to make a change. However, there could be someone on the crew with more Steadi experience. It not, the best you can do is work with them on the rehearsals, go slow and give them a chance to learn and digest. You may not be able to fully commit to all your moves if you don't feel confident in your safety. I'm not sure what to suggest beyond that Mark.
  23. Two of the three times I've taken a fall during a show were because I accepted a utility who was not a Steadicam utility. Both were embarrassing, one drew blood and either one could have been physically a life changer. The guys that specialize in Steadi are worth their weight in gold and then some and they are in high demand. That's why you see the top live ops taking their Steadi Utility with them on every job or they just don't go. It's that important and that's on shows with two days of rehearsals. It happens in the real world but I sure recommend you stay away from it. Robert
