Alexa / Codex Onboard combination
Dave Thompson replied to Mark Karavite's topic in Cameras (Film/Video/HD)
Mark- Here are a few photos from today. Started a job yesterday with the Alexa and Codex and it was sad with the recorder mounted on top. Got to this point today which is much much better. Still needs to be refined, but am on the right track. Balances better and can now use the lowmode plate. Basically an AB plate screwed to the Codex. CPT in Atlanta did a wicked job of making the plate after one phone call and a sketch from the 2nd AC. Props to them. There are some other problems that have come about so if you have questions, email me. Dave Davethompsonsoc@mac.com -
Michael- Email me if you are interested in the PRO 2(non HD) centerpost cable and top and bottom modules. The bottom junction box doesnt have the battery mounts. Dave Thompson Davethompsonsoc@mac.com

circue du soleil 3D film in Vegas
Dave Thompson replied to brooksrobinson's topic in General Discussion
I am burning you a copy of the catalogue as I write this Josh. I am even going to include a locket of his hair that got caught on some of the velcro from the rig as he scurried by. The rig weighed more than he did. The 50' techno with a Flight Head and the 3d rig(2 Alexas and 5:1 zooms) was 200+ lbs. -
circue du soleil 3D film in Vegas
Dave Thompson replied to brooksrobinson's topic in General Discussion
I guess I have to publicly admit that I was working at the Justin Bieber 3D concert. The photo in Micheals post was the other stedicam rig operated by Kyle Rudolph. The one I was using included 2 F35s, 2 20mm Master Primes, a recorder and wireless HD transmitter. Attached is a photo(sorry for the poor quality) and it weighed in at 70 + lbs. -
circue du soleil 3D film in Vegas
Dave Thompson replied to brooksrobinson's topic in General Discussion
I did a 3D concert film here in NYC not to long ago and they are right about the 70+lbs. It's definitely a beast and a lot of mass to put into motion. You dont really need a long post because the camera(F35 w/ 20mm Master prime in my case) that is vertical actually puts the weight below the gimbal so it act like bottom weight. Its strange to wrap your head around it but once you pick it up you immediately understand. Pace also had a recorder and wireless transmitter on the setup that I carried. It maxes out the PRO arm so it takes a bit of muscle to move it around. Any questions, feel free to email me. Dave Thompson Davethompsonsoc@mac.com -

canatrans or modules 4000?
Dave Thompson replied to mike laureys's topic in Video Assist and Video Accessories
I third the Cramped Attic transmitter. A very nice substitute for the Modulus. My current show we were using the Modulus and switched because the Modulus was zapping out the Panatape. No problems what so ever with interference on the Panatape and a clean picture back to the village. Nice product and a simple plug and play replacement. -
After dealing with way to many hoopy scoop brackets for a panatape, tapping the plate with the post thread seemed to be the simplest solution. I tapped both the top and bottom plates so it is an easy switch for high and low mode. Works great.

$2000.00 and it is the same cable as the PRO, video and power all in one. We did a side by side with the Modulus and it was equal. Dave

Demoed this on the movie I just finished. Liked it enough to purchase one. Contact David Hable @ Cramped Attic (604)254-8619. Specify which ant. you want. I went with a BNC. Channels 14-69. 10-36VDC. PRO cable compatible. What else can I say, same size as the Modulus and a nice replacement or backup without the headache. David is a nice guy and will listen to complaints or compliments(i.e. suggestions on how to make it better). Dave Thompson

Your "Setup du jour"
Dave Thompson replied to Kareem La Vaullee's topic in Picture and History Archives
I built this as a "running" rig for the movie I start on Monday. It was done with the help of a conversation with Chris H. about his lite weight rig. Dave Thompson, SOC -

What are the best FF solutions for HD ?
Dave Thompson replied to Matt Burton's topic in Follow Focus
Preston has a remote Iris box that is pretty sweet. So I guess that's a 3rd way to do it. Dave Thompson, SOC -
ARRI ST - first time baby
Dave Thompson replied to Thomas English's topic in Cameras (Film/Video/HD)
Thomas- If you can get the LT 100% video tap it will save a little weight and give you a better image. The regular 400 ft mags are fine . The show I am on doesnt have them and I personally think it is one less part to the conversion. The ARRI lowmode bracket will fit the ST and LT with or without the 100% top if you have the right pieces. Weight wise it probably comes in a little lighter than a 535B and I would say with Ultra Primes it balances very nicely. Dave Thompson, SOC -
If it is truly a 10 minute shot you will roll out on a 1000' with the ramping. So you are going to have to break it up anyway. S16 with an 800' or 1200' might work depending on how long you will be at 100fps. Dave Thompson, SOC
