  1. "I seriously doubt that the Zephyr is wired with 14gauge wire up the post which is appropriate for the current draw." Makes you wonder why Tiffen has an Alexa Plus sat on a Zephyr and being demonstrated under power at a demo day, if the Zephyr would just burn out. If the job required a considerable amount of steadicam, then obviously a better rig would be advised and required. However, on the majority of 'real world' 'jobs' I work on, we allocate a recce day where what is required/environment and equipment needed is factored. It is at this point, should a steadicam shot be something that a production wants to throw in the mix... It can be. I haven't turned up on a job not knowing what the day had in store for a considerable amount of time. Again, if that was the case, I wouldn't recommend it. I think this is all common sense isn't it? Mark, Indeed the outer shell is plastic to house the twin video pathways and power, but the guts are all metal. As you say, clarification.
  2. yes, correct. 24v. I was going to buy the Tiffen one but the Tiffen supplier couldn't definitively answer if it would power an alexa... So I got one made up for half the price. Wolfgang that video is excellent. It shows the Alexa taking power from just one battery...
  3. Thanks for some of the comments, others kinda prove my point on getting a definitive answer. At no point am I suggesting this is a solution for everything, it's horses for courses. For a simple shot and set-up, my tests so far have proved strong and sufficient. I've shot a considerable amount of work for clients that don't require a telepromter or external sound, shots utilising high frame rates. I've factored the additional weight of a RFF, filters and a video sender. So as mentioned, I need to test the additional draw of those items. I have the Zephyr for my C300 kits and others, but it's nice to know at a push, provided that its LW solution... my Alexa can be flown too, maybe not in your real world, but at least in mine.
  4. HI I own an Alexa, and I bought a Zephyr. I tried to get a definitive answer wether or not the alexa could 1. Be flown on the Zephyr? 2. Be powered by the sled? I didn't get a clear answer, there were some who said no way and others that said it could be possible and even Tiffen couldn't answer the question about powering. So I had a cable made up myself and I can now answer those two questions. 1 YES, the Alexa can be flown. It's very close to the limit on the zephyr but it doesn't bottom out and you should fly the Alexa as LW as possible. Remove what you can (this makes balancing much easier anyway) and use the 15mm inbuilt rods and Arri LW mattebox 2 YES. you can power the alexa through the sled provided that you get the 24v adaptor to rig 2x vlocks to the sled (good for counterbalacing the alexa too) and you make sure that in the menu you drop the Alexa power warning to around 12v. I think the batteries have a huge amount to do with it also! I'm using 2x Hawk wood VL-175's I have the ARRI QR Baseplate for the Alexa which I'll use from now on as the pictured setup felt secure, but I'd rather have the additional support, even if heavier. The camera was solid tho. I believe this rig will take a RFF without any difficulties weight wise, I have to test the additional power drain. I use a SmallHD monitor also, it's self powered and it has a better weight to it for counterbalancing. hope this info is of any use to someone else.
  5. I flew the Alexa today and I knew and had doubts that the alexa was on the Zephyrs limit. I can happily say It was ok. With no battery on the back of the Alexa, and the EVF and it's support removed (just two screws). The unit sat on it fine and it wasn't too heavy. I have a set of cp.2's which are lightweight, I'm using the 15mm inbuilt for the Alexa with Carbon rods and an Arri MMB-1. I'll take a picture of the rig when it's all cabled up ;) Thanks for the quick responses. My first day here.
  6. Hi Folks Having a little issue trying to work out how to power my Alexa on my Zephyr. The Alrea Batt is a Fischer 2 pin. My Zephyr is equipped with the 24V option and the sled is obviously 3 pin lemo. I have the 3pin lemo to 4 pin Xlr with my sled... and Arri do a Fischer to 3 pin xlr... How do I make the 2 ends meet. I've been searching and looking everywhere for a 3pin lemo to 2 pin fischer but nothing found. can I buy the Arri fischer to 3 pin xlr and then use a 4 pin xlr to 3 pin xlr to bridge the gap? I'm not sure how many op's have flown the Alexa on a Zephyr here and also used the 24v 2xbatt option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers Dave
