Hey guys, We built a real-time 5GHz spectrum analyzer into Bolt 3000 receivers. This will be a free firmware update in the near future, but we're looking for some beta testers to give it a shot. We used it extensively at IBC this year and it came in super handy. There is no better way to quickly scan for the best channel to set your Bolt system to. If you're interested in giving it a go, shoot me a private message and ill shoot you over the new firmware. It will be available for the 1000 and 500 just after its officially launched for the 3000.

Hey Brad, It can be fixed, but honestly, you might be better off just moving to the 2nd generation 2000, which will preserve compatibility with Sidekick 1. We might have a couple leftover here. Shoot an email to Kyle@teradek.com -- he will be able to fill you in. As you mentioned, the newer 1000 and 3000 models will not work with Sidekick 1. Sorry about that!

Hey Dan, Shoot an email to support@teradek.com to see what they say. Are there any other wireless systems around? How is the Bolt mounted? If you have a 600, 1000, 2000, or 3000 you can manually select a frequency to operate on, which might be able to avoid any interference in your area.

With firmware version 2.0.4, we have introduced the following for 3rd generation Bolts: * Added support for Canon HDMI time code input, SDI timecode output (time code is not re-embedded into the HDMI signal) * Sony / ARRI / Canon SDI record start/stop flags are now outputting correctly on 3rd generation Bolts You can download the firmware here.

Hey Patrick, We picked up a PIX recorder and a Sony F5 yesterday so we're on our way to identifying and fixing the issues! Im hoping to get an update out before Christmas, but since everyone here will be going on vacation at varying times it might be pushed to early January. Nevertheless, I will keep you guys posted. Hopefully its an easy fix and we'll be able to push this out soon.

Hey John, The 1st generation Bolt 2000 cannot do PSF, but does support typical progressive and interlaced resolutions and frame rates (compare to the modern units). While the 1st generation was a great product for its time, we have done a lot of development on the platform, making our newer systems far more robust, feature-rich, and lightweight. $4500 is a good price and if you don't plan to push it to its limits, i'd say it will treat you well. These systems will also work with the 1st generation Sidekick, though the pairing process can take a bit of time since we had to retroactively implement it into this older device. All in all, if you can increase your budget slightly, try to get a 2nd generation Bolt 2000. However, if budget doesn't permit that, I think you'll be generally happy with the 1st gen. Just my 2 cents.

Im working with the engineers on this now. We don't own any of this gear so it takes a little time for us to rent it, test it, and fix the issue. Hang in there. The Clip decoder will allow you to pull focus the way you want, at the same latency the Clip streams to an iPad. Bolt has less than a milisecond of delay (unnoticeable) and the image is visually lossless. Granted, its different technology (OFDM, not Wifi) and it is more expensive. If you go down the Clip route, I highly recommend using an access point when doing this (i.e. dont just allow the Clip ENC to connect to the Clip DEC directly). This will ensure a much stronger wireless connection, will give you more range, and overall, a better experience. ANY router will work, just make sure its 5GHz and not 2.4GHz. Oh and make sure you get the Clip Decoder with external antennas - it'll give you better signal reception. I love Clip and I think a lot of people in the industry would fall in love with it too if they just gave it a chance. The image quality is great and the delay is so so small. Don't use Clip for pulling focus! Repeat: don't use Clip for pulling focus! While the Clip is fantastic for confidence monitoring to an iPad (just 4 frames of latency), its not meant for use with what you plan to do. This is why we have the Teradek Bolt!

Hey Frederic, Ill pass your information up to our head of engineering to figure out whats going on. When we released Sidekick, we never had any intention of supporting Paralinx products. We decided to add it in anyway after numerous requests, but we knew there would be some limitations due to the differences between Paralinx and Teradek technology. Be assured that any future Teradek/Paralinx products will be completely aligned since we are now under the same company. I encourage you to shoot an email to Support@teradek.com just to log your complaint so we can have it in the system and treat it as a high priority bug.

Hey Matias, Interesting that you're seeing lesser video quality with the Sidekick vs an Arrow X. Can you describe the difference? Is the Sidekick more washed out or something else? Sidekick should look as good as any other model from Teradek & Paralinx. Hey Alec, Thanks for the feedback. It really helps us get a better understanding of our end users and their needs. Unfortunately, I dont have control over the development cycle, but I am sure you understand where we are coming from on a business level. If we don't constantly innovate, somebody else will and that will certainly put us out of business at some point down the line. The reason why I am active on this forum is to turn feedback into real products, just like we did with the Sidekick. Just look at how far we've come from the very first Bolt Pro! Not many companies can say they design, manufacture, and assemble their entire product line here in Southern California. Not only that, but we try to stay engaged with all of you to ensure we're giving you the tools you need to be successful. Yes, the product turnover is going to be much quicker than what it was like in the past, but im looking to you guys to help us figure out a model that will work for everyone. I can't promise we can implement every idea, but its certainly worth exploring.

For the last two Bolt releases, lots of people have asked us for an upgrade program. Could you guys let me know what other companies in this industry do such a thing? I'd like to take a look at how they conduct the process so we can evaluate whether or not we can pull it off in the future.

Gah im sorry! This is definitely a worthwhile update, especially with the 20MHz channels on the 3000. That, I think, is going to be a big lifesaver when you're in a pinch. Hey Brad, unfortunately there is no upgrade path this time around. We're still evaluating our options for the new Sidekick. Details will follow as soon as I learn more.

Hey James, because of the difference in radios on the 1000 and 3000, the current Sidekick will not be compatible. However, we are exploring options for a new version.

Hi Guys, We've introduced two new Bolt systems today: the Bolt 1000 and 3000. The website sums up what the new capabilities are (and how the specs compare to our current systems), but the short story is: Longer Range Now up to 3000ft (1000ft for the Bolt 1000) 20MHz Channels Available only on the 3000, 20MHz channels allow you to operate more than twice as many Bolts at one location (provided RF conditions permit). It also allows you to avoid heavy interference since these channels use less bandwidth. The drawback is that the PSF, interlaced, and 1080p60/50 are not currently supported in this mode - we are working on a software fix for it. 2 New DFS Channels Even more spectrum to transmit over in the USA and Europe 20% Smaller Chassis The TX is lighter and a good deal smaller than the current systems. The RX is the same size and a little lighter. Bolt Identity The TX and RX now have colored caps that can be swapped in and out, allowing you to more easily identity which units are paired together while on set. Rapid Reconnection Reconnect times have been greatly improved - nearly instantaneous once you come back into range. This goes hand in hand with all of the work we've done to the firmware to make the system rock solid. Built-in HDMI to SDI converter You can connect both your on-camera monitor and your video source via the Bolt TX (HDMI in, SDI Loop Out to monitor). This was not possible on previous versions of Bolt. New Firmware We've spent a lot of time refining how our software works to ensure these units hit their full range right out of the box. The wireless link has been greatly improved so it should be much more resilient in tougher conditions. Metadata All of the features found on our current systems is also be available on these new models. New Bolt models come in SDI only and Dual (HDMI + 3G-SDI) varieties.
