  1. James, it has been so long that I really don’t remember. I’m not even sure where mine are as i’ve Only been using fiber for years. I remember buying them from a company in Burbank. The name Gepco comes to mind. Not sure if that was the business or the brand. Laird also makes them and I believe are available from B&H. Sorry I’m not much help.
  2. James, Most of us bought triax to coax adaptors instead of buying a jumper. Use spaghetti thin coax of your choice. Much smaller and more flexible than any of the manufactured jumpers and you can have a dozen back up coax cables fairly inexpensivly.
  3. Is the ring that tightens the top stage to the post tight? It’s located under the Docking ring. It got me a few weeks back.
  4. Just a couple weeks ago we had an aging punk rock star perform on JKL. During the sound check / rehearsal , he spit a mouthful right at me, missed me and my gear by inches. I turned to my Utility and told him to unplug the camera. I hung up the rig, walked into the booth as calmly as I could and informed the Director and Producers that I wouldn't be shooting the musical guest. After watching a playback of my camera, the Producer said, "I don't blame you, let's go get a cup of coffee." I think he felt the need to get me out of the building to cool off. It was a nice gesture but unnecessary. I wasn't going to retaliate or do anything more to jeopardize what is a highly coveted position on an ongoing show. I suppose they could have insisted that I shoot the performance or send me home but I'm pleased to say, they had my back. Kind of rare in this business. It also helps that I've been around a few years and have been extremely loyal to Jimmy and the show. I must admit, it felt pretty good to stand up to unacceptable behavior and not suffer any repercussions. As for Iggy, here's the deal Pop, I'm kind of a dick when it comes to holding a grudge. Apology, not accepted.
  5. Frank, good suggestion. I will pass it along next time he can be reached. Janet, all good points and I am mostly in agreement with you. He has been out to sea for the better part of a year so I'll leave it up to him to determine what he's capable of dealing with. He certainly knows by now, or will learn very quickly the limitations. He's experienced with my Ultra2 so it's not as if I simply shipped him a box of stuff that he's never seen. I suspect there will be certain activities that he will say, this is a Steadicam shoot and abandon the notion of lens changes etc. You may very well be right however, and the thing becomes a door stop! In any event, I'd like to be a fly on the wall and peak in on him!
  6. Some of you are aware that my son Jake is shooting for a cruise line. Basically mini documentaries of the passengers' experiences that are offered for sale. The bulk of his shooting has been hand held and off stix, however he wished not only to add some production value to his work, but preserve and improve his budding Steadicam skills. He works alone, in tight quarters, on and off the ship, boats, buses, hiking etc. A full size rig laden with accessories simply wouldn't be practical. He has a dslr available to mount so I purchased a used Pilot. It came with its original sd monitor, which brings me to the point of this post. How to get an hdmi signal out of the camera into the monitor, as efficiently and inexpensively as possible. I mentioned it to a buddy who provides monitors and technical support on many of the television shows and specials. He has used Aja and deciminator boxes, but with a very respected engineer tested a $25 box. They were a bit shocked that it met their needs and that it might meet ours. The problem was how to power it, it has a usb input and the pilot has a dc barrel plug. Enter the good folks at Media Blackout who made me a dc barrel to usb jumper. Added some cables from Amazon and for less than $100 we have a signal out of the camera, through the post and into the monitor. Will report in a few weeks how everything holds up to the riggers of life at sea.
  7. Looking for an inexpensive small rig. Will be flying a dslr and minimal accessories. I already own an Ultra2 and a Pro Cine Live. Neither are an option for this project. Respond here or email cameramankris@gmail.com
  8. Brett, It is my understanding that you will not get your Union hours. Unless, your corporation becomes a signatory and makes the contribution to Motion Picture. The funds have to come from somewhere! There is also the business of workers comp insurance. Like Janice I have billed all equipment via the company and gone on Production's payroll for my labor. If it's a non union job that will accept an invoice for labor, I will go that route. My accountant has had no problems dealing with this. One W2 or twenty, it's just math. Torch
  9. have you looked in your local thrift stores?
  10. I was just informed by off duty LAPD officer that a rig was found in a trash bin and is being held at the Hollywood sub station. That's all I know
  11. The Utility position is under appreciated. Often times, folks think anyone can do it and that's simply not the case. I work with $100k/year guys that while it may not have been their dream, have become career specialist that are very much the professionals that we claim to be. It doesn't matter if I'm on steadi or doing hand held, if I see my utility run out the wire, and then recoil it to his liking, my confidence level goes up a notch.
  12. Norm's 1" riser. He'll make it any length you want . I held my arm out and said make it this high. Probably 5'. He charged me $25. Added a crutch tip and tennis racket wrap.
