  1. Hi Rob, Glad to hear you and your fiancee are safe and well. Enjoy the holiday. Hope that the work stays in Thailand, a beautifull country and many beautiful people. Take care Macca
  2. Hi Rob van Gelder, Have just awoken to the news of the bombs in Bankok. Please post when you can and let us know your alright. Have you gone home to the Netherlands for the holidays? To the rest of the steadicam community, have a great new year. All the best Macca
  3. Hey Stephen, Good interview. Having done quite a lot of aerial work in Oz and some in the south of the land of the Long white cloud and too much in Asia I can identify with a lot of it. Most important. When the production company say they have 1 mil worth of insurance, ask for 5. I mil will pay of the mortgage and look after the family when you die, 5 will cover the refit of the house and medical bills if you're a paraplegic. macca
  4. Hi there Stephen, Long time no chat. Sounds like a tough one. Of course you have your insurance, we all do. Perhaps we need to re write the rental contract to reflect that if the Production does not insure the equipment it will be responsible for all repairs and rental coverage while it is unavailable or replacement if stolen from a premises with security supplied by production. I know that is what they used to insure against originaly but now they seem to think that we should wear it. I know my insurance never covered loss of income while something was being repaired. I recently did 3 months on an Aussie show called Mc Leod's Daughters as Camera operator. No steadicam as such, but i did about 5 days with a local rented in rig. As I am a company I had to show them a 20 Million dollar Public liability policy. Public liability!!! Please. I am not supplying any gear so the only threat to the public or rest of the crew is if they trip over me. Sorry Stephen, I am rambling. Glad to hear the PM is with you. Perhaps you write a rental contract as I've suggested and turn up tommorow and don't work until it's signed. The director will be extremely frustrated lookeing at a steadicam and operator he can't use until a sign of and that is always good leverage. all the best mate macca BTW, what's the show so we can keep an eye out for it?
  5. Hi there Ramon, I could well be wrong but I don't think there was ever a variable shutter in the 2C. If there is I would think it's an after market thing that someone has had built for a specific job. All the best with the search. Macca
  6. Hi Guys, Isaww it at either the Soa workshop in 1991 or when Garrett came to Oz for a workshop. I am sure he has it, or perhaps it was Jerry Holway. It is a classic. All the best Macca
  7. Hi all, Great words and philosophy indeed. I believe the Haskell Wexler quote is "why are steadicam operators working on a different script to the rest of us?" All the best Macca
  8. Hey Jamie, I can only agree to what has been said before and one other comment. Wait for the cut. It will not be one shot. So mny Dir and DPs want the whole thing in one and that is partly understandable, but even they know its going to an edit. All the best Macca
  9. Michael, Think of your gimbal hand as a second lens. No matter what arm you have its that slight adjustment with the gimbal hand that makes the shot. Your feet and body shouldn't come into it. You position the rig with that hand. That's why we walk normaly with the rig close and through doorways ( and church pews ) with it way out in front. there's no room for us to be next to the rig. But the camera has to in the right place, and you do that with the gimbal hand. Do a couple of days on a boat and you'll see that hand automatically adjust for the boat's movement as well as yours. All the best Macca
  10. Hi Lars, I remember my first shot. About 13 years ago. Back then Jerry, Gaarrett and co also stessed the need for non camera rehersal. It was a music video and I was able to walk through the shot with the director and he explained the major points to me. All the way through the first take I beratted myself for poor horizons and framed to centre or very edgy. I'm beating myself up and heading back to the director. His comment was "It's a bit to smooth, this is rock and roll" I thought I'd spent 5 K going to Yellow Springs to learn how to make it smooth. The big trick is to learn what they ant and then deliver. All the best It only gets better from here. Macca
  11. Hi all, And hello Robbie, hows Tailand? Living films, what a story! Years ago while on a fast series my focus puller turned up on a monday and said " I've made you this and you WILL use it." For a mark 1 PRO he took a handtruck, welded a plate on the base and another plate 8 inches above that. An old section of a real Century stand was welded into the middle of the frame. The front from top to bottom is lined with light ply wood, covered with rubber and foam. Two hooks on the back of the trolley, one with a 6 inch diameter PVC pipe underneath it. So thats the discription, now picture this. On the bottom plate sits a foam lined, lo profile tubby for the batteries. at least 4 or 5 at any time so no need for a shot bag. On the second plate is my dilly bag with tools, cigs, sweets palm pilot, call sheet and anything else for the day. The docking bracket sits on the c stand top and can be raised or lowered depending on the length of the rig. Obviously with PRO #28 that was nothing like the stretch we can get with an Ultra etc. On the hooks go the Vest and the arm sits safely in the pipe hanging from the other. It worked beautifully with that pro and the concept works for all rigs. The great thing is it could easily go as oversized baggage and fit in a rental car. I still have it and have used it for years. I guess its the compromise between having it all on one trolley or being able to move the essentials quickly and safely. All the best Macca
  12. Dear Matt, Piracy is one reason Producers can't pay like they could. We have saying in OZ that works around the world, Pull your head in. All the best Macca
  13. Dear James and posters, A point of Order! I've had a couple of reds so excuuuuuuuse me (thanx Steve Martin) If the 1st AC is spotting, who is doing focus? There is no speacialist SC focus pullers in Oz because they would starve. All the good focus pullers here in Melb. can handle a SC as they handle dollies, cranes and sticks. I am now retired because of lack of work but when I was doing TVc's, series and film, all my focus pullers could set up and dynamically balance a rig because they were shown how and they were interested. On the Mighty Awful Flower Arrangers, oops, Power Rangers, Peter Terakas (RIP) could pull focus sitting in a directors chair 20 feet away on a night shoot and at the end of the take you just had to look at him and get the nod. Never was there a bad Neg report. One operator did ask him to move once every 15 minutes so we'd know he was alive but that was Pete. And thats being a first AC. If anyone noticed a bit of vitriol, well yes, it's there. Sorry. Macca
  14. Lars, Yellow springs is beautiful in fall. Coming from Oz I was stunned at the location in 1990. On top of that you'll be trained by Jerry, Garrett and some great guest instructors. All the best Macca
