TV rates and some producers new tactic!
BJMcDonnell SOC replied to Michael Stumpf's topic in General Discussion
Halloween? I agree that we all should hold together our rates and no low balling. We only hurt each other by this. I've heard many accounts of this going on. I've even heard of people giving the gear for free just to get the job. Come on guys REALLY?! I know that alot of new guys coming up want the big shows but please guys don't take the bad rate because it causes a snowball effect for everyone. And stand up for the gear you paid for. You didn't pay all that money to get stepped on. Who cares if you are a "A" or "B" or "F" camera operator. We work hard for what we make and lets keep it that way. Especially as a steadicam operator because it is wear on the gear and not to mention your body. Especially in the Television world I hear more and more the producers trying to pay less and less. Don't stand for it. -

Pushing and Rescheduling

Here is a good one, I just flew home because my show got shut down for two weeks due to fire hazard in Moscow. We are suppose to go back in two weeks TBD on the fires. My gear is still there because it is really tough to get equipment shipped if it isnt in a crate full of gear. Im not getting paid now nor am I getting rental on my gear on this hiatus. Production has filed a insurance claim because of the fires. I do have a Agent Russell Todd and there is nothing we can due do to some sort of deal agreement if something like this was to happen. So here I am sitting at home trying to get the smoke out of my lungs that I inhailed for two weeks straight. It is a bummer because Ive only been home for 1 day and I already got a ton of calls. Sure I could try to work and rent someone elses gear from them. Its just a mess. ANyway, Im home for a few days then heading back out. Anybody care to grab some drinks in the next few days? -

"Classic" Steadi-Something Rig Demo
BJMcDonnell SOC replied to Scott Jason Gill's topic in General Discussion
I have found a new obi wan! I must travel to learn the mad skillz this man has to offer. I will teach you guys when I return at the next workshop. I just have to remember to leave my docking stand behind. Wish me luck my friends. -
Guess I will chime in here. I own both a PRO 2 sled and a Nexus AR sled. Both work very well. As per what people have said, yes you need to learn regular steadicam operating before you bust into this kind of investment. For my experience I use my PRO 2 sled all the time. When I go out for steadicam jobs it is the tool I always use. The AR is a specialty item. If the D.P. and director have AR shots and want to pay for it then thats when it is used. I've created killer shots with my AR and it works like a champ. It is way harder to operate than regular steadicam and it does take more physically out of you. I personally wouldn't want to be in the AR all day long on any show. Like I said it works for shots designed for the AR.
-
Oh Man I am really bummed I missed this too. I'm outta town too. Hey Erwin thank you too for all you helped me out with. You sold me my first sled and have been a great friend ever since. I'm happy for you man and Give em hell over there. You will totally be missed here in California. Keep us updated on whats up with you and yours. Have a safe journey.

Yea the P1 cameras were what they had on the Pace rig. Im curious though, does the PS technics camera system compensate for the convergence movement on the camera? The pace system I had to use a special made battery system that moved with the camera up top to keep the horizon level. Anyone know if the PS technics rig does that?
-
I haven't flown the rig you are talking about but I hear it is a pretty good weight for steadi. Yea the cabled up thing kinda blows unless you can do it with fiber cable. I just flew the Pace 3D fusion rig and it was a heavy beast. I had a fiber cable so the cable issue was no big problem. Yep no whip pans. The cool part is watching playback at video village in 3D. Slap on some glasses and check out yer work. Pretty rad stuff. I do like Paradise FX little rig they have for steadi. It is really nice for steadi. It is almost too light. Have fun Brad. I thought you were on that film with Tom Richmond? Hit me up for drinks soon.
-
Well said Alec. I couldn't agree with you more. Hell, half the time I don't even have time to check the dynamic balance. Usually I get started and steadicam is up. Usually when a break comes up and I have time, I will then dynamic balance the sled. It really is simple and I think adding another piece of gear to try to get it right is overkill.
-
You guys are all NERDS lol.
-
PRO 2 rig basically does it all. Im just saying. Small cameras to big cameras no problem. Add some Lisigav and boom!
-
Do you have a date when they will be Available Charles buddy? Im heading out for a feature and we are using 2 red cameras and I actualy would like to purchase 2 for my kit. Hit me up and lemme know.
-
I know its late notice but me and a few buddies are hitting up Mt. Baldy tomorrow for a snowboard day. If anyone is in California and wants to meet up come on up.
