John E Fry - UK Steadicam Operator

I have always been fascinated by the moving camera, be it on a dolly, jib, or crane but after a bit of research I heard many mentions of an invention called Steadicam - and I knew I had found the ultimate way to move a camera.

Shortly after I found an old Steadicam JR in a second hand shop in my local town. They didn't know what it was so I offered them a hundred quid for it. Half an hour later I was attempting to balance my trusty Hi8 handycam to it & after a few months practice knew Steadicam was for me!

From there I completed my Film & TV degree & shortly after was Steadicam trained by ex-Optex instructor Dave Crute at Rock Steadi Pictures, who I now work with often & instruct the NFTS Steadicam short course with. Since learning the big rigs I have worked on many short films (haven't we all), several big features, many corporate videos, OBs and TV shows in the UK.

I have a passion for filmmaking, the outdoors, skiing and providing opportunities for young people as a Scout leader. Needless to say, I always have a camcorder (& the old JR) handy!
