  1. Eric, I take it you received my apology email, but just in case.. I apologize for my previous post and the one before that. When I originally read them, I was in communications with some very frustrating people, and my mood made me read your comments as critical and unfriendly. Just for the sake of checking, though, I reread your posts and I couldn't have been more wrong. Here you were trying to help, and I was throwing out criticisms at you. Janice, I owe you an appology as well. Again, see my email, but I see now the great error of my ways. Well, anyways I'm very sorry. I've requested my account and these posts to be removed, and blocked my username so that my very misguided and poor attitude doesn't follow me on to the future, when I hope that you guys on the forums will consider me a friend. I've decided that given the current frustrations of my life, now is not the best time to be on the forum. I'll join again once I can truly classify myself to be a full time pro steadi op. Cheers until later everybody!
  2. Eric, I'm a bit of a private person, so excuse me if I don't hand out my home address. Your IP tracker lust be off though, because my home is Minneapolis, MN, and my family lives in Bern, CH, where I am often and post from. Economics was my previous career path, and I was in an internship /job agreement for on-the-site learning (over in CH) up until the end of this summer, when I left it to presue my real dream. But that's a bit complex a story to tell when I'm just blowing off steam on somebodys reel post (not to mention at the time they were having me help somebody who was trying to steal my spot, which you can read in the original post). I considered what I was doing to be, in part, a job. So I called it that. But that is neither here nor there. Why does it seem that I'm pushing back the help I'm getting? On the contrary, I've learned a lot. When I argue, it's because I feel something inaccurate has been posted (such as the above statement). I think if you read this thread, you'll see how many times I admit that I was wrong and should have read the forum more first. But, since you have time to read, even with your busy schedule, I'll address each question. Question 1: choosing a workshop - I learned which workshop would best suit my needs and locations. I did not argue at all. Question 2: cables - I learned how many of each cable would be good to have, and contradicted your snide post about me not understanding the equipment or the career. Question 3: Mk-v - I learned about their company issues, and what topstage and gimbal suit me the best. I contradicted again your comments that I had no idea what I was doing. Question 4: monitors - I learned which type of monitor would fit ky budget. This question: I learned batteries were rebranded, to read more before posting, and that Eric is finding out where I live. It seems to be a problem between me and only one other operator... I'm also curious as to why you're putting so much time into figuring me out. Im just another name. There's no need to look up where I live or hear my career story. My market is thousands of miles from yours or anybody on the forum. I'm interested to hear your reasoning on this.
  3. I look forward to the day when I have more time, for many reasons :) I have found a wealth of knowledge here, enough to justify not asking two of my four questions. The question about cables isn't counted anymore, sice I actually was hoping to just start a friendly interesting discussion. I still stand by this question though, and the one about MK-V topstage/gimbal (since those parts had been discussed, but no comparison could be drawn). Here is a sticky suggestion: tell people to search this website through google. After Mark told me to do that, most of my questions were answered. The forum search just doesn't work well enough for skimming. Cheers (and will a mod please ask Tim to delete this?) Alex
  4. Looks like one of my posts was deleted. If you're going to do that, just do us all a favour and delete the whole thread... James, I couldn't agree more. I should have read more before asking these questions. A few of my questions could have been knocked off that way. This was my mistake and I take full responsibility for it. ------I still feel that this one had every reason to be asked. Until Rob told me that these were re-branded batteries, which then allowed me to find information on it, there was nothing to be found anywhere on the internet about how these batteries would behave in a steadicam environment.------ I appologize to everybody if it seems that I haven't been taking away anything from these threads. I do listen and take into account each and every individual post. Let's stop this "that's xx experience talking", though. I've gotten as much good advice from ops of 5 years as ops of 25 so far, and I don't intend to start weighing each post by the number of years behind it. A few grey haired ops (not you Janice, you've been very helpful yet honest, and I appreciate both) appear to be fed up with these questions entireley. If that's the case, why not make it a closed forum, invite only? Otherwise you're going to get questions, some of them new and some of them not. Cheers, Alex
  5. I have now covered all of my questions that couldn't be answered by archives or real world contacts. Ill handle the rest from here. Cheers to everybody who's helped me along the way. I hope again that my next post will be an update of my toffees. Eric I should add that I in no way expect to take a workshop then make it. I have said many times that I plan on taking a job as an assistant and then doing low budget work to get going. Not sure where you got the idea I thought I could just jump in. I've asked Tim to delete some of these threads, since only one stayed on topic, so expect to see a few less threads soon. Cheers, Alex
  6. Sorry rRob, you said asset not assistant, my mistake. But I suppose it's one in the same in a way. Cheers, A
  7. Janice, I too agree with you. The best way to learn is to learn from your own experiences and mistakes. While it would nit appear so from the four (yes four,( my thread about cables was really meant to be a friendly discussion, not a self serving question) questions, I have hundreds more, which have in turn been answered by previous threads in the archives, pm messages, and operators in my current and future locations. However, as much as in would like to have found an answer from an operator, or from a thread, operators that I can talk to use batteries that are far to expensive, and there was not a single thread on this forum discussing these batteries. I realize that you, Eric, and others learned without answers, but I have limited funds and time. I already dedicate my time for almost the entire day to working at my current day job, and working my way through one of the most complex immigration systems in the world. If I make a mistake and buy bad batteries, thats it. I own bad batteries. No more money left to go buy better ones, no more time left to try to tweak them. I need to get it Ruhr the first time. But you should know that I made a big list of questions, and there were only five left by the time I was done talking with people. I posted them all, and now I hope my next post will be thanking everybody for their help, and sharing my success story. Eric, your posts, to quote "Happy-with-MK-V-Eric", 'show an agenda'. You aren't just annoyed with my few questions, you don't like me because I still believe in MK-V. Well I don't believe that somebody with a glide cam should advertise themself as a Steadicam operator, but if I were ever in a position to help them, I would do it gladly. It's ironic, really, that you love XCSbecause they bend over to help operators, but you seem to have a moral issue with doing that yourself. I've seen your posts, nit just in my thread but in others too. You don't answer questions, you criticize and plug XCS products. You shuld also know that I care nothing about what you think of me. There are a very limited number if ops on this forum that I would ever consider meeting, and as for the rest, they can think what they like. Cheers to this of you who did answer my simple question. With that new info, I can complete my research. Rob, you are spot on with your suggestion of being an assistant. I'm already doing some searching for an op to attach myself to. Cheers, H (that one was for you Eric)
  8. If my counting is correct, I have asked five questions total in the month of July. Sorry if that's too many, but I was told by several operators that workshops do not cover these types of things. I already chatted with ops, both in my current and future locations, but Unfortunatley their monitors, batteries, etc don't make sense for me price wise. I've done all of my research to the best that I can, but the forums are difficult to navigate, and if I were to read every single post on the forums (as somebody suggested), I would be too old by the end to hold up the rig. This thread talks about a product that hasn't been discussed here before. By answering it, somebody then provides an answer to anybody in the future who may be wondering the same thing. But Ill gladly refrain from asking any questions again if somebody can prove that there is a better way out there to find out about this particular kind of battery than by asking here. Cheers..
  9. Thanks very much. I may or may not end up using a battery on the monitor, but I'm glad to have the option open.
  10. Does anybody have experience with Anton Bauer or V-Mount 90wh or 150wh batteries from Hired Gun Video, or their 4-way charger? The price is right, and I'm quite interested, but I couldn't find any reviews. Cheers, Alex
  11. Does Marshall offer a V-mount version? I've recently decided to go with v-mount, since it's what's in my area, and I'm looking at powering the monitor with an individual battery (since it's so light weight). Cheers, Alex
  12. I saw that back in 2009, a rep from Marshal said adjustable frame limes and a digi level would be added in 90 days to a new monitor. Did either happen? Also those of you who participated in the monitor shootout in 2009, your work continues to help people, myself included, and I'm sure that as long as the thread is there it will help operators well into the future.
  13. The latest version of the marshall does auto flip when it detects scan reverse signal. I pleasantly just found this out. JA Wow! Thanks very much for this! That just bumped the marshall way up on my list. While I agree that the monitor isn't the best place to make cuts, I just ran a calculation of everything I'll need to buy, and it's getting near the top of what I'll be able to get financed.
  14. Sorry if I worded my question wrong. I'm not expecting something on-par with the Transvideo SBL series at this price range, I was just wondering what my other options are that are similar to the Transvideo Rainbow II (I mentioned the pros and cons more for those not familiar with the monitor, not describing everything I'm looking for). I'll see if I can stretch my budget to the Cinetronic, but otherwise I appreciate the other suggestions. Andrew, how does the Marshall monitor do in sunlight? I've actually just been chatting with another op about that one, and that was the only area I was unsure about. Other than that, it fits my needs well enough. Thanks again for the help!
  15. What part of asking about a budget-friendly monitor makes it appear that I don't understand the gear? I also don't have time to read through hundreds of threads, and the search on the forum is nothing to be proud of. I'll be sure to take a look into the Cinetronics. I've been following the thread for a while, it looks like a great deal.
  16. For those of you who don't know, I'm in the process of budgeting. That's BUDGETING, not buying. While I'm appreciative that you guys are going out of your way to remind me to do this and that before buying, I assure you that I do plan to do these things, and right now I am NOT buying. But as Mark pointed out, it is never too early to budget in this economy. So, getting to my point, I've only tried out a few monitors, and not in ideal circumstances (gloomy days, indoors, etc). My favorite was the Transvideo SBL series, but at $8000, it's way out of my price range (even used it doesn't drop that much). I also have looked at the the Rainbow II 6.5", but from what I've looked at, people are saying it's more of a director's monitor than a steadicam one. It does have some nice features, but lacks framelines and a level (the level isn't such a big deal though), and it's SD (not sure about downconverting, etc). However it does fit exactly at my price point. I'm sure that there are other monitors out there in my price range, new or used (for used I mean it could be possible to find a monitor at that price used, not that I'm looking for actual used offers), and I'd love to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks very much! Again this is for budgeting reasons only :)
  17. Sorry, I forgot about the boxes. 3500€ eh? Doesn't sound so attractive anymore :(
  18. I've noticed that there was a change of rolls once Rachel left. She was the customer support person, and Howard was the designer. Now that she's gone, I feel he's done a good job filling both rolls. For those of you who are using this post as a way to flame and bash MK-V's rigs in general, let's keep in mind that the issue is limited to the centerpost, and the rigs themselves are not bad (this is not targeted at the O.P., who said he was otherwise happy with the system). I'm very glad to hear that your gimbal was replaced. I've gotten the idea from this thread that BETZ can fix the problem with power and signal down the post. Is this correct?
  19. Thanks very much, and no problem. The link confused me too. Now I finally have a solid understanding about cables! I'll still have to look at what's in my area, but now I know what kinds to buy. Still, if anybody could comment on which cables are included in the MK-V pack, that'd be appreciated.
  20. Brian, I understand that each kind of camera needs its own power cable, but what I'm asking about is the video signal cable, which runs from the camera to the topstage/j-box to provide a video feed to the internal cable, which in turn connects to the monitor. The video cable I linked to was just an example. I'm either buying Pro or MK-V (nothing against Tiffen, it's just what's in my area), so I'm not interested in that cable. The thing about it though is that it's not a power cable, it's a video cable. Having a RED-specific video cable lead me to believe that each kind of camera needs its own type of video cable. However if somebody could explain that, I'd appreciate it. Mark, thanks for clarifying that. I do have an operator friend in the area, so I'll see if I can get together with him for a weekend and just focus on all the little things that I'm still confused about. A big thanks to everybody here, though. Apart from the video cable issue, I feel much more confident in knowing what I'll have to buy than I was yesterday. You can expect to see a few more questions from me on the forum though! I'd like to bring the horses up to speed with the wagon.
  21. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/736303-REG/Steadicam_802_0107_Red_Video_Cable.html I took it to be for connecting the camera to the j box at the top of the sled.
  22. It's an expensive business alright, but at least there's high wages and no undercutting. Oh wait... I suppose $200 each isn't too bad. My main focus is television and video, but I'll look into cables for a few film cameras I might come across (i.e. I might take some RED jobs when I'm getting started, but I don't plan, nor would I be qualified, to take jobs with big 35mm rigs). So could somebody confirm that the Arri 12v would cover my TV/Video needs? The jumpers are quite a bit more, which is why I'll have to see if I'll need two of each. If anybody from the TV industry could chip in. How often do these things get worn down? Also has anybody here ordered a cable package from MK-V? It looks easy enough to get a single bundle with "everything" you need, but all the description says is "includes cables for every camera...we can also sell cables for the RED, ...(and a list of a bunch of other cameras that apparently don't qualify as "every camera"). And finally, could somebody explain the video feed? I've seen camera-specific cables for sale somewhere, but from Erik's response, I'm guessing that Steadi ops don't use those? I appreciate the help everybody. Obviously I'll learn a lot of this stuff at the workshop, but once I'm done with the workshop, I think I'll be too eager to create a realistic budget and business plan.
  23. I don't have much experience with building big rigs. Ive done training with bigger rigs, but they've always been focused more on the operating side. Unfortunatley I only have had the chance to work with video cameras on my own rig. I'm taking a workshop soon, hopefully in December, so I agree this is a little soon to be asking, but with prices what they are and me not getting any richer, I'm preparing for the expense well in advance. The reason I asked was that Tiffen sells a red-specific video cable, but I haven't seen specific cables on other ops lists. Cheers, Alex
  24. Thanks very much. I'm still unsure what market I'm going to start off in (I have ties to a lot of places), but I'll do plenty of research into what's in the area once I relocate. Am I also correct to assume that most video cameras (i.e. broadcast) use the Arri 12v? Also, I'm a little confused here. I was under the impression that I would also need a video cable for each of the different types of cameras to connect to the J-BOX. Is this not the case?
  25. I know this is a very open question, but how many of each different type of cable should an operator have in their kit? I'm assuming no less than two for all your camera power cables, maybe three for ones you work with often, and three or four of each of the cables that are always used (FF, monitor cable, centerpost cables)? I'm not sure though how the pros handle it. I also include fiber/triax jumpers in the question. For those of you who do TV, how many of each do you bring with you? I'd love to hear some feedback on how many you keep of each around.
