Premium Members AndreasKielb Posted October 13, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Hi, I already have a tally light system using a photo cell which works well so far if I tape it on the cameras tally lamp. It might be easier to use the tally connector some cameras provide. According to the manual the Grass Valley LDK 8000, which is quite common here, provides a tally output using the tracker or the DC output sockets. http://www.grassvalley.com/docs/Manuals/cameras/ldk8000/3922-496-30571.v03.b501.pdf This is the pinout of the DC Output connector (Hirose 4-pole): pin 1: Ground pin 2: On air pin 3: No connection pin 4: +12 Vdc (max. 18W) But what does this mean? Is there going to be voltage between pins 2 and 1 if the camera is on air that can be used to power an LED stripe on the monitor directly or do I need a transistor cirquit of some kind in a small box? Thanks a lot in advance and best regards. Andreas Kielb Edited October 13, 2010 by AndreasKielb
Premium Members Sven Joukes Posted October 13, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 13, 2010 Hi Andreas, My guess is, connect the 2 leads that go to your photo cell to pin1 (GND) and pin2 (tally). What I make up from the manual is that internally these two are closed when the camera is on air (the same thing that happens in the photo-cell, when it is hit by light). It doesn't matter which lead connects to which pin, it's just a contact that opens or closes inside the camera. The LEDs do need external power. But that's just my guess... Ask a trained professional to be sure! Best, Sven
Premium Members Mike Germond SOC Posted October 14, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 14, 2010 (edited) From my experience with the Sony cameras, Sven's thoughts are true. It's just a trigger. Open is no tally, closed completes the circuit and lights the tally. I use the Tracker connector on the Sony HDC-1500 to feed an Autoscript TallyPlus which ultimately piggybacks to the Ultra2's connector on the stage and lights up my monitor tally. Panasonic also uses the 4pin DC Out hirose for tally, but they also use the 3rd pin for Run/Stop whereas Grass Valley leaves it empty. Here's the diagram for Sony's tracker (for which I use pins 6 & 10): Edited October 14, 2010 by Mike Germond
Premium Members AndreasKielb Posted October 14, 2010 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted October 14, 2010 Thanks a lot, will try it next time I have access to the camera. Do you know which type of 10 pol connector the Sony 1500 is using? Might be good to make a similar cable for Sony cameras. Andreas
