Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted July 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 It's about time you responded, Robert! Thanks for your feedback. I've had much experience with the Boxx and Camwave since. Just worked with a Boxx Meridian that was hit and miss from a camera transmitting from a Condor about 200' away. It was not as good as I have seen in the past. They also had a couple of the RF Systems HD transmitters (Noodles) that I had used previously on Spiderman which were absolutely rock solid from a Cablecam rig hundreds of yards away. Only problem was the 3 or 4 frame delay. I'm happy to hear about this 2nd generation Aminon chipset. Maybe it will bring the Camwave up to the level of the Boxx for less $
Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted July 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 There are like 5 on ebay right now, seems like folks know something new is about to be released..... Won't it be funny to look back in say 5 years when EVERY operator has a $300 rock solid HD tx and Rx set up in their kit and we laugh at how much stuff used to cost.... like the present price on a Sony BVW600 $700 compared to $80k in late 1995. Â Ahhhh progress!
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted July 20, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 Ozzie: that's exactly why I invested in the Paralinx Arrow. Maybe the product isn't EXACTLY what we want right now, but they get the price and needs of our market and the camera market in general. I like my Arrow, but I also want Paralinx to succeed in bringing more powerful revisions to the market at the price segment you're alluding to. Premium Members Twojay Dhillon Posted July 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 21, 2012 Just had not one, but TWO CamWaves fail miserably on me over at Hollywood Air two days ago. Sub-rented a Switronix and the picture was rock-solid. Just paid for a Switronix Recon Ultra from B&H, yesterday.

In the interest of fairness, my Switronix Recon Ultra showed up DOA, out of the box/cardboard coffin. The folks at Switronix were quite concerned and encouraged me to go through the dealer I purchased from and to report back on the replacement.  I was having another Op test out the Recon Ultra on a shoot last night but we could get no picture whatsoever, so we switched out to my Canatrans (hooked to an SD video tap off of a 16mm film camera) and the picture popped up immediately.  I shall report back when my replacement Recon Ultra shows up.

to be very clear: there are currently 4 different Camwave CW-5 production runs out in the marketplace. I'm always referring to the latest U52"D" serial number. The older A,B & C were less good in my opinion.  Look at the serial number when testing those Camwaves....

Thats why it can work so well indoors where others lose signal when you go around a corner etc. Â Â My .02 Â Rich Davis LA

I knew this because I have also had the same experience with the Camwave that worked well inside, but outside, not so much. But when paying $18,000 for the Boxx vs $3500 for a Camwave I would hope it would work at least 5 times better and that includes the great outdoors. Premium Members Thomas English Posted July 25, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 25, 2012 Well we all know that a bottle of wine thats 5 times the price isn't 5 times better. Its an investment game of diminishing returns like anything in life. Â If you use a proper antenna array on the Boxx you won't get the issues you speak off. Its a good system that you can play with. Â Â I remember when $1800 for a Modulus sounded like a lot of money. Now we are expected to pay 10 times that amount for something that producers will argue should be part of our package or something to make it more convenient for us. (and please lets not start a discussion of how to charge extra for this gear) We had a 4 flat panel antenna array from Boxx pointed at the tx on that show and it was still intermittent. For that much money it had better fucking work.
Premium Members Thomas English Posted July 27, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 27, 2012 If you can't charge for a boxx then offer a Switronix for £50 or $80 and recommend they get in a boxx themselves and drop you rental hire if they get one in.  I'm trying to work out how to put a similar antenna array onto a Switronix RX.  Hey you can always just get a cute little fresh out of college assistant to carry around a WEVI RX and keep nice and close to you. You'd still be coming in at a third the daily rental of a Boxx and it would be a lot more enjoyable.  And remember that $1800 for a Modulus 12 years ago is the equivilant to double that today... Its just our rates that didn't go up with inflation.
