William Walsh
Hey guys, I'm a fairly newbie operator working on purchasing my first rig. I only have experience using a G-50 arm right now, but the Luna arm looks intriguing...because it's made by the master himself and has a crazy high weight capacity. What are the pros & cons of each, assuming they cost about the same? Thanks for your input
Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted April 4, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 I'd stay away from G-Series arms
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted April 4, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 Steadyrig Silver Spring and Sachtler Artemis ACT2 are also to consider...
Evrim KAYA
I only heard only good things about the Luna arm. But you might want to check also the new G-50X arm before deciding.
Premium Members JensSchroeder Posted April 4, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 When I started out with steadicam a nice colleague gave me the advice not to limit myself with a low capacity arm. I didn't follow that advice because of budget problems and immediately regretted that decision. Maybe you should keep in mind that you need a good load capacity if those big jobs are coming. Plus I always have made very good experience with Robert Luna.
Premium Members James Puli Posted April 4, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 I second the Silver Spring arm. My first arm was Silver Spring and I loved it, until I could afford to upgrade. The technology behind the Silver Spring and Luna arms (Steadicam 3a arms essentially) has been around for 25-30 years, and very rarely these days does anyone ever have a problem with either arm. Both safe options, I'd try them both and see which one you like!

Premium Members GrantCulwell Posted April 5, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2013 I've never had the pleasure of trying the Luna arm but I've flown the G-50 and G-50x and have had a great experience.
Premium Members Dustin Heindl Posted April 5, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2013 Will the arm you used on my steadicam was the G50X. Just for reference. I'm not sure what a normal G50 is like in comparison. Sidenote - The G50 arm is up-gradable from Tiffen for a relatively inexpensive price. Maybe someone can chime in on the price. Premium Members Lars Erik Posted April 5, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2013 It was $1,000. But not sure what it's now. I imagine it's in that ballpark somewhere. I did mine, and the arm performs better.
Premium Members JobScholtze Posted April 5, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2013 My old Glidecam Gold arm preformed way better that my G50. Sorry, but thats how i feel about it. The arm was stiff. Even stiffer than the G70 i have owned too. Did you check out the new pro arm? Great stuff, cant go wrongwith pro
Premium Members Nils Valkenborgh Posted April 6, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 6, 2013 I flew both recently to compare them. I own a Luna arm (Jens Schroeder's old one) so of course I'm biased. Weight capacity wise the Luna wins hands down, operating wise the G50x has a little bit more boom range and is easier to reconfigure for different weight setups (and it looks prettier). I'd say right now, comparing price and quality, go for a well serviced Luna.
