Premium Members Dan Ayers Posted July 28, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 Who has flown the EX-3? Is there a weight cage and lens rings to rent? Any experience would be helpful. Thanks, Dan
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted July 28, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 Dan, Just spent a few days with one. I did not use a weight cage because we were using a PRO 35 adapter and Cooke S4 lenses. We also had an adapter plate that screws into the bottom of the camera that gives you a solid AB mount at the back so I powered the whole set up with a Dionc 90. We had some full size bricks there as well, but the weight was not necessary because we also had on a sliding base plate, wireless mic, and a 2.4GHz transmitter. All said and done it flew very well. I used four blue springs in my PRO arm, but ended up cranking them up more than I wold have thought so I probably could have left my default set-up of two blues & two blacks in there at minimal tension. If you are not using any of these toys, a weight cage would be needed with a full size rig. Good luck. Here is a picture of the set-up:
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted July 28, 2009 Moderators Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 Oh yeah, one more thing. My Preston remote cable that plugs into the PRO 35 (an Arri 3 pin fisher cable) would start & stop the spinning mirror BUT NOT start/stop the camera. The cable that passes from the PRO 35 to the EX3 apparently does not provide this function!

That would be a great thing for the Sony guys to fix. Premium Members Ed Moore Posted July 29, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 29, 2009 I assume you can get a cable for the Preston that provides run/stop on the standard Canon 8 pin broadcast lens connection? If you take a look here - http://www.jonyjib.com/motion_control.html - you can buy a cable for $100 that adapts the Canon 8 pin standard to the weird Sony connection on the camera itself. Can't remember whether that connection is on the lens (in which case not so helpful for Pro35 use) or body, but it's a useful cable to have as these cameras are everywhere at the moment. I just used one with a Pro35 and it came with an EX3 to B4 mount adaptor that provided a Fuji lens control socket - we had a cable from this to power the Pro35 but assuming you could power that separately I assume a Preston to Fuji run/stop would work there as well. Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted July 29, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 29, 2009 The bottom of the camera is not flat which is a pain in the ass because without additional support it will move. I used it on a shoot with Digiprimes and the 1/2" lens adapter adapts the connector to a standard one but I couldn't get start/stop to work through it. You don't need a downconverter. ~Jess
Premium Members Dan Ayers Posted July 30, 2009 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted July 30, 2009 Does anyone know where to get a lens gear for the EX-1 standard lens? In L.A. Thanks Dan
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted July 31, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Moviola has one that they rent out with their EX-3. If you want to buy maybe Birns and Sawyer? ~Jess
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted July 31, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 I know Redrock Micro makes various sizes of screw-on gears for this purpose. They are locally based. There are several manufacturers making add-on baseplates for the EX series that screw in at two points and manage that non-flat base issue, here's one: http://www.vfgadgets.com/grip-camera/ex3-h...se-plate-system Great looking cameras!
