Premium Members Pete Barta Posted August 3, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 3, 2009 Hey guys, Anyone out there using one of those G-Zooms? What's the build quality like, does it clamp on well, is it comfortable? I do the odd concert and am currently using a Vocas remote (Pricey) but its very bulky although i have gotten used to it. Looking at what's available would be great if you could use it with the Preston as I see it's compatible with a BFD. All the best, Pete Barta

Premium Members jason ewart Posted August 5, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2009 Hi Pete, I own a G- Zoom, have been using it for the past few years. It's a great system, the zoom and focus have a good feel and the best thing about it for me is the size, as it sits perfectly on the gimbal and very comfortable to use. When I ordered it from Eric, it wasn't compatible with a digital Preston system, so mine plugs straight into the lens. Have attached a photo. Hope this helps Cheers Jason
Premium Members Andrew 'AJ' Johnson Posted August 6, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2009 Hey Pete, Yeah that G-Zoom looks pretty cool. Nice and compact and simple. Personally, I use a focus puller with a preston for the Focus, for concerts and stuff like that now. Takes the pressure off while navigating around security dorks and concentrating on the shot. Did the PINK concert a few weeks back like this. worked great. .AJ www.ajrevolution.com
Premium Members Pete Barta Posted August 6, 2009 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2009 Hi Jason & AJ, Thanks for the info on the G-Zoom and the photo, I have to stop buying more gear my wife says. Premium Members Damien King Posted December 16, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 16, 2009 Hi Peter, I also use the G-Zoom, after seeing Jason's unit and then purchasing one for my kit i was very impressed with the G-Zoom, Erik's service and prompt reply to emails. Now I have had mine for over a year and its worked on a variety of live TV shows, generally it would be great i suppose to have a focus puller but that in this climate with some of the TV work is a mere luxury. But for all purposes the unit is superb, light, functional and the focus is always firm not light on the touch which is handy when you have other things to work around. So in the end i give this unit, now with some new upgrades, for the price a massive BIG thumbs up. Now the other units out there are more expensive and for the one u usually use its probably 8 times more expensive than this very unit. I am also plugging straight into the lens as well which is simple and easy. Well my 2 cents. Oh by the way you can never buy enough gear!!!!! regards, Damien Steadicam Owner Operator Australia
Premium Members Mike Germond SOC Posted December 18, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 18, 2009 Can any of you G-Zoom owners comment about the feel of the zoom lever? Does it work well for creeping slowly? Does it work well for ramping up (or down) speed during a zoom? Have any of you used the Bebob Zoe ENG-8, and if so how does it compare? Thanks, Mike
Premium Members Aaron Medick SOC Posted December 18, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 18, 2009 I haven't used a Bebob, but the g-zoom works and feels like a good rear control on a studio set up. I highly recommend it. It functions as it should.
Premium Members JobScholtze Posted December 31, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 31, 2009 using the bebob for several years ( owned 4 units in those time and the keep breaking ) i now use the g-zoom. Took it out on its first job today. I have the zoomcontroller, no focus. ( we use focuspullers overhere thank god ) The feel is fantastic. The build quality is also fantastic. Fits great on the gimbal. Nice thin wire, and easy to use. The only concern i have is if the cable has a good saftey connection inside the zoomcontrol. My concern is that if the cable gets stuck on for example your vest, that it breaks out of the controller. I cant see if the made something to make it extra strong inside. Well see. For the rest AA++

For the rest AA++ Pete, I saw Jason and Damiens, then Steve Cahill and myself bought one. We had to send them back but there was no problem doing it and I'm pretty happy. Best thing I've bought. Steve I believe has sent his back to get the Focus ratio changed. I had a little creeping which i sorted but the Focus is sweet! If you get a chance to spend a little, I hope you enjoy. Premium Members Mike Germond SOC Posted January 1, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 1, 2010 So there is a focus add-on for the G-zoom? I was gonna make production buy a Stanton..
Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted January 4, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 4, 2010 I have one of these now. Not had chance to use it yet, but the build quality is fantastic. Very robust and well designed. It also has all the usual functions, inc. camera run/stop, which usually get sacrificed when using lightweight cables - but the G-Zoom had both tiny flexible Mogami cabling, and all the functions...so far, so good. Erik is great with communication too, and is always quick to respond to emails.
Andrew Stone
So there is a focus add-on for the G-zoom? Mike, if you have a look at the video clip on this page you will see a demo where the index finger is operating the focus control on the unit. There isn't mention of sizing for a Flyer but he mentions he will do size mods if you take measurements with a set of calipers. -Andrew
Premium Members Erik Anderson Posted February 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 23, 2010 Hello All Thanks for all the kind words expressed about the G-Zoom!!! I really appreciate it...well there are 2 units at work right now in Vancouver for the Olympics also have units at CNN, NBC, Food Network, Martha Stewart to name a few places. As for fitting yes I will do custom fit to your gimbal handle just need an accurate measurement from you at time of order. As far as focus these units work with your existing system eg; Bartech Focus Device (Thanks Jim for this great product or should I say Device!!!!) as well as the newer Fuji and Canon lenses that have internal focus servos! Coming soon I will have an interface for you to use your own focus motor so that you will have a hardwired focus from G-Zoom to focus motor should you need to pull your own focus. Of course we all know the importance of having a focus puller I offer this product as an option you should always use discretion when deciding on pulling your own. The G-Zoom is always evolving as I get input from all the op's as to what they like and dislike and I haven't had to many dislikes. I am always looking to improve it as well so again thanks for your support for purchasing a unit or (2) in some cases! As always please contact me if you have any questions erik@g-zoom.com and you can go to the site for more information www.g-zoom.com Thanks again guys and safe flying!!!
