Modulus disfunction only in New York City

I just have the basic Modulus 3000 with handheld recievers ( no shark fins). It works fine in center city Philadelphia ( hometown) and other cities' skyscraper canyons. But I had two jobs in NYC where on one shoot along 5th Ave it was useable only within 5 feet range and it was totally useless on the open flight deck of the Intrepid ( aircraft carrier museum). I can understand if I was in the hanger below deck with all the metal bouncing signal around, but I was on the open deck and the monitor looked like I was in a galactic ion storm. Could have cabled to the monitors, but luckily both clients trusted that I was getting what they needed.

I know a shark fin antenna would have helped, but how much so? And is there just so much signal interference in NYC only?

Tom,

Midtown Manhattan is an RF nightmare. Sharkfin and quality tuner help. An antenna cut to frequency on Modulus (versus the one that comes with it) helps too. Crap shoot around there. Not surprised in the least that you had such bad luck on the Intrepid. I assume you played around with channel selection as well.

I tried various channels but no noticeable improvement. Thanks for confirming my suspicians. I have a much greater respect for all those productions I see in NYC's streets.

I used my modulus only for a short time after moving to NYC. I had interference not only in the city but in all of the boroughs. I bought an IDX camwave and although it has some latency it was well worth it for picture stability and quality.

I never used a modulus again. Now that the HD version has come along it is even stronger with virtually no latency and great picture quality.

Hybrid works well in NYC. we had 4 going in Times square.

For the modulus we make cut to frequency half wave antennae. $ 50 each

Better tuners than handhelds keep some of the excessive RF out of the front end and therefore are not swamped and desensitized by NYC RF garbage. The Sony 1041 is slightly better at this.. slightly.

Legal Newsflash:

There is provision in the federal regulations now to use Video Assist transmitters with some restrictions with permission in the USA. Look at: Federal Communications Commission §74.870 47 CFR Ch. I (10-1-04 Edition) They ask the manufacturer to: include with a wireless assist video device information regarding the requirement for users to obtain an FCC license, the requirement that stations must locate at least 129 kilometers away from a co-channel TV station, the limited class of users that may operate these devices, the authorized uses, the need for users to obtain a license, and the requirement that a local coordinator (or adjacent channel TV stations, if there is no local coordinator) must be notified prior to operation. [68 FR 12772, Mar. 17, 2003, as amended at 68 FR 69331, Dec, 12, 2003] You may read the details regarding above at:

Don't forget, there's a reason there are no more UHF TV stations. The government is selling off the UHF band and guess what, NYC is the place that will be sold to first. Start selling your Modulus becuase I bet they are going to start cracking down on users!!

Actually, all over the air television broadcast stations are in the UHF band.
