Mounting a Arri SR3 on a Flyer LE

Im mounting the heaviest camera yet on my Flyer and it looks like I need a more secure method than the one thumb screw? to the plate. Should I be using grommets and a strap? I don't have any grommits in my box of tricks any suggestions? Has any one got experience mounting such a camera onto this rig? Thanks-

First, please use your full name on this board.

Second, you are mentioning the thumb screw, this means 1th or 2th version Flyer and not the LE. You can buy a part at Tiffen to replace your thumb screw with the newer kipp handle to secure the stage better ! It is much better and costs only a couple of dollars.

 

Part numbers are KNB-130198 and WHR-093555 and you should use the spring and locking wedge with this as you do now with the current knob assembly.

 

About if the camera is possible, you need the onboard battery, 400ft magazine and choice of lens. Also a follow focus receiver and motor. I think you will hit the 17lbs spot or even more... so BE CAREFULL !

The 2nd gen Flyer limit is officially 15lbs which a bare bones SR3 will get to without a battery, and then some. There were 24v 2nd gens, so Jon might be able to power through the rig, which would be great, cause you'll break 20lbs with the battery on there. I've only got it down to 19 myself, powering through the rig.

 

A gripping pad, like you might use to open a jar would also help, or a shirt in a pinch, that's how I used to do it! You're overloading the rig, and you're finding out where it starts to fail because of it. The kip handle Erik mentions will help a lot!

Hi JP as mentioned you will want to fly an SR3 without the on-board battery. Preferably with a light weight prime, and most importantly if you can skip the Arri base plate system and find a lighter weight one like a Zacuto or equivalent that will cut down on the weight. Use a clip on sunshade if your outdoors to avoid using a heavy matte-box if you can.

 

I have flown an SR3 several times on my Flyer LE with a Chrosziel Fox wireless FF, clip on sunshade, camera body, Video tap (jurgens top handle, AZ-Spectrum, CEI, etc) 400 mag, Zacuto baseplate (wasn't needed when using the Arri light weight rods that clip on the camera) and running 2x dionic 90s without any issues.

 

Might want to cut some bicycle tire tubes to make reinforcement bands if your planning on anything heavier or look into the new Zephyr (sell and trade up) rig if you are planning to fly SR3's more often than not.
