Directly after the second score, during the celebration, it looked like the player turned into the 'way too close' camera... then the camera went waaaay aloft. Which brings me to the other thought, is it just me or are these operators getting too far into these players personal space... I saw during the national anthems the camera move into (not zoom) a chin to eyebrow shot. How about lensing in?!?

I'm glad someone else brought this up, I can't watch the intro's, it drives me crazy . . . . .use the lens, right?

I can't imagine the director wants them 2 feet in front of the players plus it just bones the other cameras

I give the Ops props for the endurance and shooting all these games but really, use the lens, he deserved to get pushed away

yeah my first reaction was "I can't believe he just hit the camera", but soon after I was thinking "why was he so close?" Unnecessarily close, when he could easily just back up a bit and zoom in. Still a real douche move by the player when he could have just laughed it off.

Hi Alfeo,

Some of the operators do not have zoom remotes on their gimbals and choose to use wide angle lenses, as a result they have to be a few inches away from the subject in order to fill the frame, this is even more evident during the team anthems where there is a line of mascots in front of the players.

Ok this might be a very silly question but....why would they NOT have a zoom/focus module when shooting live tv with wide angle broadcast lenses? ... these guys always shoot Soccer....non?

The very first game of the World Cup during the Anthems I could see every single footstep in the shot and was mortified. Others have been nice and smooth and have actually used the lens....how can there be this inconsistency on such a high profile event from what I would assume to be top operators within that particular circle of work?

Ohya...GER vs ARG party at my place in Toronto this Sat July 3rd : )

Cheers All!

gonna be honest... I did the same thing during my athletic days back in 1998... It was handheld, but the camera dude swung around and clocked my upside the head with the lens when he did so... I slapped his camera pretty hard, so I can relate a bit

Anyone know what kind of rigs they are using? The director is pretty good about not showing the other camera ops.

Yeah... Usually after the game, when all the players gather around on the field and party, you can sometimes see the Steadicam. They are often Tiffen rigs. G70 arm, Tiffen vest and a Clipper I guess.

Even though I have seen one operator with a PRO Arm and WK-Vest. Couldn't identify the whole rig though

Henry.

Oh yeah Bryan! Hope you'll cheer for Germany on Saturday! :D

Oh god... those poor children down front must be getting smothered by the ops when they are going in that close... If someone put a camera on me that close they would on be recording my palm as I start to extend my arm to a more comfortable spatial arrangement.

To me, its just bad operating to encroach that much with a 'non-actor' and could lead to mishaps and possible injuries... remember the Berlin Wall / segway incident! Once I even had an actor squeamish when the camera came into the one foot range...

That's what I was thinking Bryan... that's just insane not to have the proper tools for the job... I don't own one, but and TV job, I show up with one! It's not like they have to invest in a Preston FI+Z like most of us.

Has anybody done some live Tv coverage?

It just shocks me that this guys are flying full size rigs FOR 45 MINUTES!!!!!!

I just can't imagine how do they deal with it. Do they get breaks?

God bless our spoiled grip assisted fiction film sets!

What I heard is, that some of the operators don't own their own rig. They show up as partial trained operators and a local broadcasting station "donates" a Tiffen rig. And that's just the plain rig. No extras such as a zoom gun or a Preston FI+Z
