I don't understand how they apply steadicam use in this World Cup. What were/are they (broadcaster) thinking ?

The operating is average and sometimes even painfull to watch. The intro's are 'tenenkrommend' (dutch), simple translation pain in the ass to watch. Framing problems, noticeable footsteps and a lot of horizontal problems. Today with the Netherlands agains Slovakia it is no better, due the wind in the stadium it is even worse...

I must admit, never have been 45min continue in the full rig without docking, never done soccer steady.. but a average operator can do

this 'better' ? ?

Just saying,

Cheers, Erik

What I heard is, that some of the operators don't own their own rig. They show up as partial trained operators and a local broadcasting station "donates" a Tiffen rig. And that's just the plain rig. No extras such as a zoom gun or a Preston FI+Z

Hi Henry

I am currently working on this event. Local broadcast stations are not involved with the main game coverage. HBS from France are covering this event as Host Broadcaster and are using 2 crews from France, Germany and the UK. All the steadi ops have provided their own kit including follow focus. I together with 4 other ops are using Sachtler rigs, there are also some EFP and MKV rigs being used.

Hi Bo

Cool to have one of the World Cup operators on board! It has been brought to my attention by another operator, that some of you guys got a local rig.

It sounded plausible to me, due to some missing equipment such as the zoom control. Even though I have already seen some "zoom work" done by the operator.

How many operators are working on that event?

Anyone know what kind of rigs they are using? The director is pretty good about not showing the other camera ops.

Yeah... Usually after the game, when all the players gather around on the field and party, you can sometimes see the Steadicam. They are often Tiffen rigs. G70 arm, Tiffen vest and a Clipper I guess.

Even though I have seen one operator with a PRO Arm and WK-Vest. Couldn't identify the whole rig though

Henry.

Oh yeah Bryan! Hope you'll cheer for Germany on Saturday! :D

Has anybody done some live Tv coverage?

It just shocks me that this guys are flying full size rigs FOR 45 MINUTES!!!!!!

I just can't imagine how do they deal with it. Do they get breaks?

God bless our spoiled grip assisted fiction film sets!

I think you'll find that 45 minutes in the rig is not very long at all for some gents here.

of working +45 minutes

not this poor guy again! He is being trashed on the forum before.

on the other hand hats off to you guys.

I know for sure I have worn the vest for good 6 hours before lunch and other 6 after lunch on some moronic shows but I don't think I have actually being flying for that long (45 minutes not 6 hours). Kudos you you and your stamina

Hi Henry,

There was a situation last year during the Confederations Cup when a local rig was hired because of a theft, however I have not heard anything recently from the 12 World Cup operators that they have had to hire a rig. There are many steadicams here with Foreign Broadcasters, ESPN alone have 3 so maybe one of them hired locally?

Most match operators have bought spares, there is also a complete rig available from HBS and a complete rig for Artemis Owners provided by Telemedia (Sachtler dealer) in the event of any mishaps.

At this point having experienced a malfunction myself, I would like to mention my sincere thanks to Curt Schaller from Camera Dynamics (Artemis rig), who has provided me with unbelievable swift support and replacements within days. Great to know that no matter where you are in the world, back up is just around the corner.

Henry: Of course I'm cheering for Germany on Saturday : ) ......... I predict it to be the best match of the cup between classic rivals.

Bo: Brother I'm envious...I would give my left nut to shoot World Cup.

I'm sure my brethren who shoot live tv will all agree that 45mins of straight operating is not overwhelming. Yes, one must build up the physical stamina over time but this is a challenge we face often. We all have little techniques that make it work.

We should have a World Cup of Steadicam Operating one day....but no drug testing : )

hey guys,

I'm quite lucky to be down here as well, only as a fan sadly, but enjoying every minute of it. most of the games ive seen/will see have been in cape town--where these two shots are from (netherlands vs cameroon). it does seem like a good test of stamina/will indeed and I was surprised to see one guy tonight actually take off the rig and set it down for a full 5 seconds during the spain/port match! otherwise i havent caught a rig leaving an operator's body at all on the field. ive seen a good deal of operating with one hand (on gimbal) at times (even when action is close) but i guess i understand how one could end up defaulting to this over the length of a match. no one seems to ever rest fully (over shoulder) at all. kudos to the ops for trudging through for sure, although I too have seen some rather questionable shots throughout the cup.

i love how the assistant in the second pic creates great contrast by showing how casual part of the job can be since he's enjoying the game sitting down, while the operator does his thing standing up.

to the guys in cape town (and port elizabeth on friday): if u ever need a break, please let me know!!!

-mike
