Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 21, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 Top rods good for motors, but what if you need to use a rod-mounted mattebox? (not a fan of clip-ons for still lenses--enough play already with the lens port).

Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 21, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 I had a custom base made with fore and aft rods and component mounting at the rear--a commercial version is in the works.

Daniel Schade
This system maybe universal, for whatever DSLR bodies may come in the future, but it certainly isn't the most elegant solution. I've worked extensively with the cage from Viewfactor. This is cage is what makes a DSLR camera "production" ready and puts a box around the peg that a Camera Department can work with (Lemo power). Also it balances really well on a steadicam! Problem is that there aren't many cages around 'cause there's such a high demand for them. This guy has one of the first cages and prototypes a lot of the new gear from Viewfactor, http://adamjrichman.com/ Cheers.
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted August 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 23, 2010 I've used the Viewfactor cage a few times. It's a nice solution, with some caveats. I wouldn't say that it balances ideally for Steadicam, because the mass is still quite compact. My system expands the masses into a more conventional form factor that increases inertia. Works great for handheld and studio mode as well. Hopefully I'll be able to post pictures soon, but we are still prototyping.

Sounds really cool, only thing that put me off about the viewfactor was that it was camera specific, so no futureproofing really against very frequent updates, as is common from SLR manufacturers, I look forward to seeing what you've come up with. When I used it we had dual Dionic HCs mounted on the rods behind the camera and the blackmagic box, downconverter and a couple of other odds and ends mounted on the side and top of the cage. I thought it expanded the masses nicely and I didn't feel the need to add a weight plate. Would have still sucked for handheld but for steadicam or tripod it seemed to work well. What are you doing differently in this regard? ~Jess
Premium Members Scott Dropkin Posted August 27, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 27, 2010 I used a new cage that a friend of my built. He made it with the black magic box installed and all the proper connectors (lemos and fischer) on both sides. And an IDX battery mount to power everything. It was still a little light with everything on it, including the cam-wave, but not bad. Here are some pics...
