Premium Members Stephen Murphy Posted November 16, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 16, 2004 As my workload begins to wind down for the year im looking at more and more dvds, and im wondering what everyone else's favourites steadicam shots or steadicam intensive movies are? We all love "The Shining" and "the Fugitive" but im more interested in those lesser known movies which might have some really good steadicam work in them, that i may have missed. In recent times im thinking of things like "Hollow man" and "blade 2" which both had some excellent steadicam work(ok so the films werent great - i can sit through just about anything). Only recently did i catch "Casino" which has some fantastic work by a variety of great ops. Anyone else here want to chime in with some recommendations or personal favourites? Some great work ive been re-watching recently: "Carlitos way", "Heat", "Xmen 2", "Point break" , and "Ronin" (David Crone is so damn good)

Premium Members jay kilroy Posted November 17, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 17, 2004 I recently watched the movie "Elephant", directed by Gus Van Zandt (sp)? Tons of steadicam. The movie was a bit slow, but I would say it was like 80 to 90 percent steadicam.

Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted November 17, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 17, 2004 I have to agree about Elephant. Matias Mesa did some wonderful work in that film. He also did some nice work in another Van Sant film called Gerry, which came out in 2002. If you thought Elephant was slow you should see Gerry! Although I really enjoyed both films. I saw the first episode of "House, M.D." last night and saw some really nice steadicam as well. IMDB lists Jeff Mart as the operator. The show has a very interesting look. There are parts of it that look cross processed and also bleach bypassed. Good show.
Premium Members Howard J Smith Posted November 17, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 17, 2004 Hi Brad How are you? yes I went to see Jeff Mart on the set of "House" yesterday - and he is using his new MK-V Nexus and loving it. (and showing off some of the new MK-V toys - inc focus system) Jeff has been doing some very interesting stuff with his new set up - inc. flying the Panavision lightweight with the 10:1 zoom! - it was great to watch him work. My fav. films for "steadicam" flow are "Terminator 2" and "Predator 2" - the way Jimmy Muro moves with the actors was/is something I aspired to. - the bit in Predator 2 where they are storming the building at the begining and Danny Glover is going up the stairs - very simple but beauifully done. And also I would have to add the great opening of "Outbreak" - stunning, simple and very well done. take care and maybe see you at the Guild meeting. All the best Howard
Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted November 18, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 18, 2004 take care and maybe see you at the Guild meeting. All the best Howard <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm planning on being there....hopefully you will too. Back on the subject....since no one has mentioned it....the opening shot of The Birdcage is a great one. Scott Sakamoto I believe did that shot, as well as a lot of other great steadicam. Premium Members Andre Trudel Posted November 25, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 25, 2004 I just watched ?Rundown.? I?d say roughly 70 to 80 percent or possible even more of that movie is Steadicam.

Premium Members Howard J Smith Posted November 29, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 29, 2004 Hi peter How are you? In answer to your question - I was repling to a friend of mine - Brad Grimmett - hence "Hi Brad, how are you?" and I was answering a question of his. And complementing another friend of mine Jeff Mart on his many activements - and some of the amzing things he does and has been doing on "House MD". Sorry if this was not clear. Also Jeff Marts shot of running up the Pyramid in mexico for the rebok add, many moons ago - was one of the reasons I started Steadicam. I would also like to add Peter Cav. also did some excellent work on Eyes Wide Shut as well. Jimmy Muro and Larry Mc C. are still my heros. - Some of the shots that we take for granted as dolly and 'legs' are infact 'Steadicam' - these are my true Favorite shots, the subtle ones that totally fit with the story and it is not until the end of the shot/scene that you realise that they were/had to be 'Steadicam'. Take care All the best Howard
