Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted November 17, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 17, 2010 No it doesn't keep us safe, it's called security theater for a reason. The danger is'nt in what you can carry on board, it's what you can ship.... cargo isn't scanned Think about that for a while TSA is a smoke and mirrors dog and pony show that is designed to make you feel safe, but it's far from making flying safer. Eric is right. It's all public perception of safety.
Moderators Janice Arthur Posted November 17, 2010 Moderators Report Share Posted November 17, 2010 Hi all; I'm not in the camp that TSA is full of a bunch of idiots. I'm not even sure I agree that its all smoke and mirrors. Security is always about more than you see. No one knows what's really going on besides those on the innermost levels and that ain't me. What I know is that the scans can see more than without them and they are partially there to be able to process more people faster than in the past given the new threats. Clearly they aren't capable of catching everything. I don't know about cargo but since the Lockerbee bombing all US mail has been going via Fed-ex cargo for at least a decade. The new attention to cargo is good and I'm sure will get lots of good attention in the future. As for the personal scan/pat downs debate Sydney has issues with their invasiveness, I don't and we've discussed that. I don't know enough about to talk further I was just pointing out in a very sexual society some grey pictures of me weren't a worry to me. It seems to be discussion is very good but I'm not sure what Congressional hearings will produce, (not much in my opinion). Let them go to work. Have a great day/week, I'm off to my accounting program! JA

Let's see the Pilots union calls the TSA and their efforts a Joke and have even told their members to NOT do the backscatter screenings. PETN explosives will not be seen by the backscatter unit nor is it seen by the carryon xray unit Cago is not scanned, your bags are but not cargo. If you send you gear via a freight forwarder they are what's called a "Known Shipper" and NOTHING that they ship is scanned. Mail is still transported on commercial airliners very little percentage wise is transported fedex (Only express and priority mail and even then depending on the route) Yeah TSA and homeland security are doing a great job.... Like I said Security Theater
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted November 17, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 17, 2010 The times that I have encountered the body scanners I actually found that the pat down was faster than going through the scanner. They do nothing to speed up the process and are significantly slower than the metal detector. Also know they instruct you to take your wallet, passport, etc... and put it through the x-ray as they don't want it on you during the full body x-ray. I don't know about you but I have had people pick up my stuff after going through the x-ray machine and there is no way in hell I am putting such personal items on the conveyor belt. If you protest they will let you carry it in your hand instead. I am sure that there are people concerned with real security on airplanes but the reactive nature to all of the rules is a joke and quite frankly no matter how secure they make their secure zone it does little to make us safer as it simply moves the target to something else. Do you want your entire life to be spent going through TSA security checkpoints everytime you want to enter a different building, bus, taxi, etc? If you don't then it doesn't accomplish much. If they wanted machines that actually accomplish something they would be using the ones that sniff for bombs instead of the full body x-rays. These do accomplish something for both security and for speed as with them they could allow us to keep our shoes on and maybe even carry liquids. Full body x-rays aren't nearly as good at detecting bombs. The things that they will detect are small weapons that quite frankly could easily be substituted for something else that is just as effective of a weapon that can be easily carried onto a plane. Also the health concern is a very real one. In modern society we are subjected to a lot of radiation and any unnecessary radiation is something to be concerned about. There have currently been no long term studies on the health effects of the technology used in these machines. Also there are now a number of reports saying that these machines actually expose you to much higher doses of radiation than the manufacturers claim. It seems the manufacturers are averaging the amount over your entire body and as a result your skin is getting a much higher dosage than the numbers they claim. Even if the health risk is only a small one I really don't feel that there is enough of a benefit.
Premium Members Steve Acheson Posted November 18, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 18, 2010 TSA is worried about body scanners, earlier this year I went through 3 security areas in 2 different airports with a full size leatherman wave in my carry on... And the first check point I walked into the wrong concourse because I read my ticket wrong and I didn't realize it until I got in and couldn't find my gate... Screw those damn body scanners Im worried about checked and carry on bags... Also you only going to be as smart as the people that are working for you, some of those TSA people are pretty stupid...
