2 minute seamless shot at the end of Dancing With The Stars tonight

Did anyone see the long steadicam live shot tonight at the end of Dancing With The Stars and the beginning of Skating With The Stars? It started on the set of DWTS and went through all of the backstage hallways and right into the set of the other live show very seamlessly, while shooting the host the whole way. Some very nice operating!! Just wondering who did it and what all went into it because it looked like a complicated shot. I've never seen two different shows blend into one another via steadicam like that. I thought it was very creative to start a new series like that. I'll try to find the shot on youtube to post.

I called John yesterday to get the scoop on this shot and he said he had mounted a teleprompter along with an onboard fill light, all attached to a Sony fiber camera which was also tethered with a cable to the control room. He said they only rehearsed it once with a stand-in and once with the host and then the live show. I don't see how you live guys do it with such little rehearsal, but I have a huge respect for your craft. I forgot to mention that John was modest and gave most of the credit for this shot to his 2 guys who were handling all the cable. I counted at least 7 narrow doorways he walked thru backwards on this shot with perfect horizon so I think he should take a little more credit. He's probably one of the nicest operators I've talked to in the business. One of these days I'll get out to LA and meet some of you guys.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Hi guys,

Thank you for your comments and I'm glad you appreciated the shot. True, it wasn't easy to do and a lot could have gone wrong on this one cuz it was live and not very rehearsed, but the utility guys behind me make me look very good (shout-out to Soulman and Travis). It seems like live shows are giving us less and less rehearsal time as budgets shrink, so I feel like we are constantly winging it. Hopefully that will change as the economy bounces back, but in the meantime all we can do is our best. I also want to echo the awesome post I just read from Janice to revel and savor your job, experience, colleagues etc. I truly agree and really love our profession.

Charles and anyone else should give me a call if you come out west to visit. It's good to meet fellow operators and I admit because of lack of free time I haven't even met a lot of you already here in LA (mostly the filmstyle ops). It seems everytime there is a get-together or party, work gets in the way. I hear what goes on at those parties and it reminds me of my college days, at least the ones I can remember at all ;)

Happy Holidays...
