Brett Manyluk Posted January 26, 2004 Report Share Posted January 26, 2004 Hey guys, I am looking to replace my old tv tuners for use with my video package for video village and I was looking for suggestions for tv tuners that work reliably with VHF/UHF transmitters. These will hook into 2 JVC ac/dc broadcast monitors... The requirements are: able to be 12v battery powered (in addition to an AC adapter) coaxial input (RF connector) to standard tv antenna composite video out Not cost thousands of dollars (like transvideo) Now I realize that there is a host of car audio tv tuners on the market now and some of these should be usable models. Any suggestions? What about those tv tuner boxes that will convert signals for use on LCD panel monitors? Anyone used these successfully with over-the-air antenna input? They have a little diversity tuner for car applications with two antennas. Have a look in the 2003 forum there a some post regarding this tuner. I'm using a flying saucer kind of receiver, works perfectly. Originally made for boats and it's capable of receiving multiple channels. Cost me approx. ? 150. Mitch Gross Posted January 26, 2004 Report Share Posted January 26, 2004 I still like the Sony TU-1041 tuner. Excellent professional piece of gear. AC power, or 12vdc via 4-pin XLR or NP1 battery pack.If your field monitors are the portable 9" or 8" industrial size (I think the JVC model is the TM-9 or something similar), then you should consider sticking it into the PortaBrace case made for these size screens. They have another case for the TU-1041 tuner that straps to the side of this monitor case. I use this setup and it's very compact and convenient. Leave it prewired in a case. I removed the old F-connector antenna mount and replaced it with a BNC ($2.50 part from Markertek and about 5 minutes work). Now I use a whip antenna from Wolf Seeberg that I again just leave mounted. For battery power I had Fred Davis make me a Y-cable just long enough to reach the large pouch on the side of the case. I could use a Anton/Bauer bricks but to both save money and so that I don't have to think about replacing batteries on the monitor I use large gels cells instead. 200w (18amp) lead acid gel cell fits perfectly in the pouch and only costs about $100 plus another $45 for the charger. 2 of them last me all day and each charges overnight. Nice portable system in two cases, one for monitor w/tuner and all prerigged and one with batts and chargers. Mitch Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted January 27, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 27, 2004 My main unit is the XCS TR-1 (Back up or second Monitor: Transvideo Hermes). Receives UHF and Cable, you can actually use it as a cable box... I think that was one of the reasons that Greg Bubb got slapped with a ban from the FCC. It works of a 9 Volt battery (internal) for a day or any DC source of 9 - 30 Volts. I use a A/B ProFormer that lasts for days. It's so small (about the size and weight of a ProFormer) that I can just velcro it to the side of any monitor. Has a LED display for channels and low battery indicator. Any BNC antenna will do but I found that the Transvideo wip antenna works very well most of the time, for other times I use the CIT Sharkfin. (The antenna that is delivered with the unit is just bad. Even Greg admits it.) The unit has actually 2 video out's (BNC) so that you can use 2 monitors simultanious. Again a very nice product by Greg Bubb, bummer there are only 50 units build... While visiting David Chameides on the set of "Catch that kid" (you may have seen previews for it on TV recently) He showed me the tuner the video guy was using. I was very impressed with the image.
