I've been asked to help shoot a recording session at Capitol Records for Japanese earthquake relief; it's going to be a 10 track jazz album and an incredible lineup of jazz musicians are coming in to record. This came up last night and I'm going to do what I can to make the video look good, they've pulled in a few guys with cameras from here and there. It should be a historic event. I'm thinking it would be nice to have Steadicam involved.

If anyone in LA is sitting around today or tomorrow and can come help the cause, I know for a fact you will experience some of the more incredible musicianship you might ever hope to hear, closeup. In the list below are some of my musical heroes from when I was a budding jazz musician in my youth so it's really exciting. If you have an HD camera of any stripe, that would be helpful...

call me at 323-350-8822 if this is anything anyone is interested in. No $$, of course...charity.

"Jazz for Japan" is a "We Are the World-like" gathering of 25 of the top jazz musicians in the world to benefit Japanese earthquake victims. The recordings will take place March 23 and 24 in Los Angeles. The album will be released April 5th worldwide via iTunes with profits benefiting the International Red Cross Japanese relief efforts.

We will be filming the sessions and interviewing the artists for DVD/PBS and possible broadcast on Japanese television.

It was an exhausting and exhilarating couple of days shooting this project--some of these guys were musical heroes of mine since I was a teenager, others I had barely heard of but being in close proximity to this level of musicianship was an experience I will never forget.

I can imagine...

If I had read this thread on time, I would have flown over just to be part of it.

Jealous,

Sven

Where will we see it Charles?

I heard "HBO special", I heard "DVD"...time will tell.

I apologized over and over again to the producer about the special hell the editors will go through. We shot with a ragtag selection of DSLR's, P2 and HDV cameras; no time code, no slates (we had to be ready to roll as soon as the musicians were ready, in three separate rooms in the studio)--everything will have to be manually synced via the onboard mike tracks. I don't think Pluraleyes will be much help with single instrument tracks against the complete mix.

Way cool! I'm also a recovering musician (jazz and classical bassist since I was 8!) and would have given up an eyeball just to be in the same room with a lot of these people!
