Just a little problem

Hey guys, I'm having a slight problem with the side to side adjustment on my top stage. The top stage is a master series, and the side to side adjustment has a tendency to shift a millimeter or two without much provocation. I'll include a link to a youtube video showing the details of the problem. It's a small shift, but as we all know, that's all it needs to be to throw the balance off mid shot. Has anyone ever seen this problem before, or dealt with it? If so, what was your solution? Thanks!

Yup. My old Master stage had that same issue. Very annoying. I tightened everything I could see with no success. That, along with the overall flex of the stage is the reason I got fed up and just ripped the thing off and put on a PRO stage. See stage upgrade...

Happy to do the same for you if you like.

I do enjoy entertaining the idea of having a Pro stage Afton, especially if this is going to be a recurring problem. I checked out the link and I am impressed. Just out of curiosity, how much would one run me? I may be in the market fairly soon. Thanks guys,

Hi Stephen,

Don't throw away a good stage.

Mine had that same problem few years ago.

The fix is relatively easy.

The side-to-side stage is held by the 2 side-to-side adjustment knobs.

Take off 1 of the 2 knobs, then add stainless steel shim(s) in between the stage and the knob.

Shim can be found at McMaster for a few bucks.

Hey Ken,

This actually was my first thought towards a solution for the problem. Unfortunately, I do not know how to take one of the knobs off of the top stage. As far as I can tell, the Master series top stage is a bit... tricky. I played around a bit trying to take off screws from the top stage, and sort of finagle my way around so that I could at least get a washer of sorts between the knob and the edge of the stage, but after 20 or so screws being removed and hardly any headway being made as to taking apart the top stage... I just decided to put it back together before I got too far ahead of myself and screwed the pooch. In response to the trickiness of the stage(and/or the lack of my ability to take it apart) I did come up with an extremely... ghetto solution. It works, but... good God I would never want a client to see it. I wrapped a freaking paper clip around it. Yay it works, and it's totally a quick ( uber quick) fix, but I'd like to eventually get something a little more solid... obviously. How exactly do you get the knobs off? I'm either... slow, or I've overlooked something obvious. I'll show a picture of what I did, as embarrassing as it is, but any insight you could give would be greatly appreciated. Granted a freaking paper clip keeps my stage from slipping, who wouldn't want a better solution without sending the entire thing to Tiffen for four figures and weeks of work.

You may be able to solve that side to side movement issue, but no amount of shims will ever remove the massive amounts of flex inherent in the Master series stage.

You could probably find a used DBII for a couple thousand or so. DBIII would be a bit more. Or just buy new - you'll likely never use anything else. I do have more of those junction boxes I made. I can send you just a bare box, I can send you a box with connectors, or you can send me your sled, a donkey box, and I'll do all the work.
