Dave Tree Posted August 23, 2011 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Hi Folks Having a little issue trying to work out how to power my Alexa on my Zephyr. The Alrea Batt is a Fischer 2 pin. My Zephyr is equipped with the 24V option and the sled is obviously 3 pin lemo. I have the 3pin lemo to 4 pin Xlr with my sled... and Arri do a Fischer to 3 pin xlr... How do I make the 2 ends meet. I've been searching and looking everywhere for a 3pin lemo to 2 pin fischer but nothing found. can I buy the Arri fischer to 3 pin xlr and then use a 4 pin xlr to 3 pin xlr to bridge the gap? I'm not sure how many op's have flown the Alexa on a Zephyr here and also used the 24v 2xbatt option. The 4pin XLR cable that Tiffen supplies is wired for 12V only, according to Mike Craigs. So it would not work to provide 24V. Best thing is probably call Terry West. I just looked and they sell the sled to Alexa cable you need. Also, check East Coast Cables because he makes it too. Also, I'm not going to say it won't work, but isn't an Alexa with all accessories kind of pushing the boundaries of the Zephyr and it's arm? I would also second the opinion that the Alexa might be too heavy - The body itself is almost 14 pounds. Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted August 23, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Tom, The key is to leave off the "few other things." :-) Seriously, you can probably go to 25lb on the camera stage (but the overall arm lift is going to be around 36lb max). One help would be to use a clip-on mattebox, mount the motor rods to the sled's dovetail (alas, another expensive Tiffen bit unless you want to do a custom job) and either mount the FF receiver to the rods, or try to save weight with a custom bracket for the receiver, to mount to the underside of the camera stage. I've been scratching my head about this very question, how to get a solid mount for the FF and motor while shaving ounces. Re the cable, Tiffen's website, as usual, is confusing and inaccurate (the 24v Arri cable page has no mention of either Alexa nor Zephyr, and erroneously describes the Fisher connector as an XLR.) Dave Tree Posted August 23, 2011 Author Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 I flew the Alexa today and I knew and had doubts that the alexa was on the Zephyrs limit. I can happily say It was ok. With no battery on the back of the Alexa, and the EVF and it's support removed (just two screws). The unit sat on it fine and it wasn't too heavy. I have a set of cp.2's which are lightweight, I'm using the 15mm inbuilt for the Alexa with Carbon rods and an Arri MMB-1. Should save wear and tear on your batteries. I just noticed you are in the UK, so maybe others can chime in about nearby sources for custom cables. What batteries are you using? I had a problem with the Artemis Cine, that have 3 IDX v-mount batteries by steadicam and i had powered the Bartech, the CamWave hd transmitter, the Arri Alexa and the Astor Monitor, but the monitor were burned i don´t know why... Have you listened something like this? What is wrong with this? The sled was made to power more than two acessories plus the camera with the same batteries, right?
