I was beyond stoked for the Bolt. Upon seeing "it" at Creatasphere, I was quite disappointed. I, along with another Op, tested both the frame delay and its range. The delay was absolutely NOT 1-1.5 frames. Whether this delay (eyeballed at ~ 3 frames) is attributable to the Canon c300/500 that it was mated to is beyond my rudimentary knowledge of those particular cameras.

The range was laughable, at best. The other Op took the camera rig out of the pop-up and walked maybe 15 yards away from the receiver and it cut out before he managed to duck behind the boat. Reconnection time was very long. On the order of 30-40 seconds.

Further, the advertised discount that was to be granted to folks that pre-ordered has vaporized. Now, instead of a discount, you get a full-featured Bolt for the price of the non-full-featured-Bolt (just below $2k). The difference between the full-featured Bolt and the non-full-featured Bolt, once these things finally pop their heads out of the birthing canal, is merely loop-though on the Tx and Rx. Bait & switch much?

I was highly unimpressed with the build quality of the Switronix (still am...), but now that the other "options" are apparent, I'll take a cheaply-housed unit that actually does what it claims (impresively so) over vapour.

Twojay, sorry to hear about your experience. However, I am happy to show you the capabilities of Bolt if you'd like to come down to our office in OC sometime. I was not at Createasphere so I am unsure of how things were setup, but in my personal use of the product I get well over the distance you list and never see reconnection times passed 10 seconds. In fact, I walked the device around an entire hall @ IBC in the Netherlands (the NAB of Europe), and it never lost connection once. That is probably one of the most brutal environments for devices operating in the 5GHz realm and the Bolt held up like a champ.

As for the delay, I can assure you that Bolt has nearly zero latency. You will only increase latency if you send the signal through convertors, non-pro monitors, or multiple pieces of hardware. We'll be at CCW in NYC tomorrow and Thursday - if you know anybody in the area, please send them over!

With regard to the pre-order discount, your information is incorrect. All sign-ups on our pre-order list will receive a full featured Bolt, which means multicast, loop-through, Lemo (6-16V), Internal Li-Ion batt, etc... Whoever told you otherwise was simply misinformed. And again, the price for our pre-order clients will be $1990 for 1TX and 1RX. As for shipping times, I wil be sending an email out early next week with a link for purchase. We have a 30 day return policy so feel free to pick one up, test it out, and if its not for you, we'll gladly provide a refund. We believe in our products and that is why we offer such a policy on all of our units.

I hope this clears some things up.

All the best,

Mike

The Arrow transmitter lives in a plastic case, but the Bolt is T6061 aluminum. If it uses PCB antennas, then I'd think the aluminum chassis would attenuate the signal and they'd need to counteract that affect somehow.

The top of the Bolt Tx and whole Rx casing is plastic for that very reason.

Will, I agree with your points on Arrow vs. Bolt.

What I was trying to get across, perhaps not being clear, is that I read a claim that the Bolt doesn't go straight from the SDI connectors "natively" into the TX, but uses a cross-converter from SDI to HDMI built into the chassis...and ouput into a consumer-type HDMI TX. Reversed process at the other end.

I should emphasize that I don't know how accurate that claim is...or even how relevent. If it works, I don't really care what levers the Wizard is pulling behind the curtain. Additional latency would be a concern, but no worse than using external converter boxes.

Mike, please read below; Would Teradek be willing to do a real-world test and record the results?

I would love to come down to your office and play with it sometime!

Will, let's head down there and test this thing out! It would be nice to wrangle up an HD camera and take our rigs and put it to a real-world test. Or perhaps Teradek is willing to make a professional HD camera available for our test and record said test???
