Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted April 3, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 3, 2012 god knows how many versions they went through for Erwin to arrive at this. Actually I believe he said he wasn't happy with it and went off to design yet another completely different cart made entirely of cases. Of course that isn't necessarily a negative as he is simply the type of person who can't stop fiddling :-) I am one myself. My cart is a custom creation. Same basic design (sled inside of the cart) but made mostly of what I had lying around in my garage. Of course many of those parts were simply blocks of aluminum before I machined them into proper form. If anyone is making a custom cart and wants a good docking riser the top riser of a steadicam stand happens to be just a bit too small to fit over a piece of 1 1/4" speedrail. A little work on a lathe and it becomes a nice beefy docking riser that fits in a speedrail fitting. Might work well with a Yaeger cart. ~Jess
Premium Members Kevin Andrews SOC Posted April 3, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 3, 2012 Do you have a pic Jess? I've been contemplating the TR-05 film tools cart, or possibly building one from magliner parts. This thread nearly has me sold on the film tools cart and I could pick it up around cinegear. Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted April 4, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2012 ...It just seemed funny seeing that handle there (Iwas referring to you docking the rig, not others hitting the handle). I tried to have Backstage make things for me in the past and they were not so eager to change their design at that time.... Oh....well I haven't busted my shins yet **knock on wood** not to say that it couldn't happen since it is in a position where when you step into the rig you do get close to it. Sorry to hear of your ordeal in asking for custom work from them, but I am glad that they have changed their toon in that regard. Andrew thanks for all the pictures and feedback mate, absolutely brilliant. Is that an american stand with some kind of holder hanging off the back? If so is that an off the shelf option? I couldn't see it online. No problem, glad I could help. Yes that is my American stand and the stand holder is an off the shelf option, though you will only find it in their "Mag World" (Magliner conversion parts) catalog... It still fits over the lip of the top shelf on their TR-05 cart without any modifications and in my opinion is another must have accessory. Premium Members James Davis Posted April 4, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2012 Amazing guys, Andrew especially, thanks again dude for all your insight and detailed photo's showing off the cart. Once again I am bowled over by what a great resource this little online community can be :)

Now that I see there is actually fun involved I get it. My point was that it seems slightly less in the way if that handle could have been put on the small lid piece that closes the cart for shipping, or on the other side of the top shelf (now a moot point since we have established the fun aspect :o ) It looks like this cart is bigger than I thought, I did not realize it was 10" longer than the yeager jr but the same width so there's more room. Premium Members Grayson Austin Posted April 4, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 4, 2012 I liked Erwin's design but don't care so much for the current Backstage design. Still not enough rig protection and after an unexplained hit to my rig that no one seemed to know anything about a couple of years ago, I went about doing it myself. Built my own cage from Speedrail and added a few "extras" of my own. See photos. This is the standard TR-04 cart which serves my purposes well. I have the whole setup of American double riser stand and Backstage wheel conversion, etc for on set and all the bits are with me that I will ever need on set but having a cart that is a sort of "Base Station" is important to me. Maybe not so much for others. I don't always need or want my whole cart "On Set" since there are so many jokers hanging around who just love to treat your cart like a Starbucks lounge. I have had to chase away extras, grips, teamsters and producers from my cart who really needed to use my cart to check their laptop, sip their coffee, take an important call, put on their makeup (not kidding), chat about the Hot extra putting on her makeup, etc, etc...
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted April 5, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 How do you ger your speedrail contraption out of the way? I also have speedrail handles. Mine are setup to swing out of the way.
Premium Members Grayson Austin Posted April 5, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 The whole thing telescopes in to almost flush with the cart. Just loosen the set screws on the speedrail crossovers that attach to the cart verticals and push the whole cage in. The bar running across at the bottom is always lower than the rig but just high enough for for shin bashing of anyone who ventures too close to the rig. I can also slide just that part back a bit for myself if I want to so I don't bash my own shins. The velvet rope is there to discourage grips and teamsters by making them feel too underdressed to enter "Club Steadicam". Works every time. Unfortunately, the actors keep getting in and running up a huge tab that they never pay... Grayson Grant Austin, SOC
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted April 5, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 5, 2012 Andrew, you have lots of power options on your cart, you're going to turn into the DIT cart with an iPhone charging station. My next cart modification will include razor wire and motion-targeting paintball guns for unauthorized personnel... and some Slayer stickers. I was thinking hydraulics and a motion sensor so whenever someone sets a drink on my cart it launches it at them.

Thx If you want to build Erwin's "Case Cart" I have the only other inner frame frame built Have you built this one Eric? I'd like to see it in person. Last time I talked with Erwin he was not happy with this cart-version either. Shipped it once and as soon as a case got a little bent he said it would not fit together properly. Also said he spent a small fortune on it. Of course Erwin never goes small on this stuff!
