Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted April 13, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 13, 2012 Just confirmed by Arri will be available this summer with the new firmware. Also, Arri will be releasing a set of brand new anamorphic lenses over the next year or two, that they are currently developing with Zeiss. Premium Members Mark Karavite Posted May 23, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 23, 2012 September of 2010 is when we first asked Arri to add the flip feature. I can't imagine what took so long, but glad to hear it's coming. Most good DIT's can accommodate an image flip at their cart before distributing they image to monitors. I always call them prior to prep with the request.

Premium Members Afton Grant Posted May 23, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 23, 2012 Were you able to flip the recorded image, or just flip the image you saw in the viewfinder? It's been able to do the latter for a long time.

It's been able to do the latter for a long time. Don't know whether Pedro was using it in 3D mode, but the Alexa has had the ability to flip and flop the image in the viewfinder for quite a while. This allows you to flip the viewfinder over to the right side of the camera. Release 5.0 allowed the user Horizontal image mirroring for 3D applications. What has been lacking is the addition of Vertical image mirroring. This is due in the 4th quarter of 2012 in the 8.0 update. Not sure if it is only on monitor output or on the recorded image and monitor output.
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted July 28, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2013 I assumed the folks in Munich would have gotten this done by now -- they must be too busy dodging criticism for the lousy eyepiece and extension. Here is a reply from one of the techs at Arri-CSC: "Although the vertical image flip For steadicam is on the drawing boards it's not yet available. Sorry my friend. Otherwise I hope you are doing well. I'll send your request along to Germany with hopes that it will be granted soon"
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted July 28, 2013 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2013 Ron, it is promised for sure for Firmware 10 later this year, they were spending all the time on the on-board codex implementation among other things....this is from the head engineer i had a long conversation with them about steadicam related issues, digital level and image flip, ... Premium Members Jeff Muhlstock SOC Posted July 28, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2013 I don't even care about this feature any more. Having shot one of the first features with Alexa, Ive been asking since the beginning. I suspect they came across some trouble with this feature... I just invert the camera and make sure video village has the ability to invert or flip monitor images. Image flip is a simple key stroke in post. I can say that I have never mounted the Alexa from a low mode bracket or handle and I never will! Traditional low mode building is a thing of the past! Premium Members Charles Papert Posted July 28, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2013 Referring back to Jen's original post, I watched a demo film of the new Master Anamorphics recently. They are quite lovely, but given their clean and immaculate nature they do of course eliminate some of the beloved old-school anamorphic artifacts, so it remains to be seen how well they will be embraced (especially at what will surely be an eye-popping rental rate). Should be fun for AC's, working at a T1.9 anamorphic?!
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted July 28, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 28, 2013 I sometimes ask all 37 people with monitors on set to stand on their heads to watch the shot while I just flip the rig :-) , but wouldn't it be nice to have that option after all these years with that camera? the new lenses sound really cool -- the execs will love them...and still ask us to keep everything in tv safe!
