Premium Members David Baldwin Posted April 28, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 28, 2012 The gal in charge of getting our permits was only able to secure a one-day permit in the lottery process. I was really hoping to spread the hike out over two days due to my extreme addiction to lisigav, but I'm determined to get to the summit either way. Anybody banged out this hill in one day? Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 28, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 28, 2012 Tom Gleason has -- I am sure he will chime in soon, whenever someone on any forum mentions hiking his spider senses tingle. A day hike might actually be easier in some ways...schlepping a 50 lb pack to 12,500 is tough. A lot drop out at the last minute so you might still get the 3 day if you check right before you go? rb
Premium Members Orlando Duguay Posted April 29, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 29, 2012 I've climbed it in a day, it's a tough hike, but totally doable if you go later in the summer when the snow levels are lower. What dates are you planning on going? You also have a very good chance of getting your three day permit at the ranger station when you arrive. People often cancel last minute and there will be extra permits available.
Premium Members Matt Petrosky Posted April 29, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 29, 2012 I'd like to hike it in a day, later in the summer when the snow is gone. I've hiked it twice, once with Mr. Baldwin, and we took a ton of gear and it was three days of slogging though the snow, post-holing most of the way—amazing workout! Apparently (this is a bit of a gamble) you can usually get multi-day permits the day-of at the ranger station on non-holiday weekends because of no-shows and cancelations. I'd be up for either, but hiking it lightweight in a day is appealing as it would be new and different. I know Tom has done both. It's about a 22-mile round-trip with over 6K in elevation change. It's a beautiful hike the whole way. Tom and I have also been talking about Kilimanjaro, but we've never gotten it together—anyone else interested? -Matt
Premium Members David Baldwin Posted April 29, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 29, 2012 Orlando- we're permitted for 11 July, so hopefully snow won't be too much of an issue. Ron- excellent point about not schlepping gear around. Rolling with a day pack, GORP, a change of socks, and a water filter sounds about a bajillion times more enjoyable than hauling the big pack up the switchbacks any day! Matt- (loving my Gorelock bruthah) Kilamanjaro sounds amazing man. A-ma-zing...I would totally be down. Summer 2013? Thanks fellas.
