Hey Nicholas, what was the exact measurement you entered on the photodon site for the DP7 HB for the screen cuts? And thanks for the recommendation, BTW.

:)

Hey Brett, I'm sorry I don't remember the exact measurements. Just measured the screen H and V in millimeters. Left about 1 mil cushions around the edges. But like Will said, I guess the AC7 size fits perfect. I do know that Photodon will cut to your exact specs.

Nicholas, I just fired off a note to SmallHD about your comments and this thread. See what happens.

Thanks Andrew, I was just fixin' to do that. It would be really great if they could improve their horizon indicator, that would make this an excellent steadicam monitor. Would also be great if there was an analog video input somewhere other than the Hiroshi plug on the side. It sucks for standard def and film projects of which I happen to be doing one right now.

Oh and Will, that Composite to HDMI converter box I got from Etek City didn't work with the Small HD HDMI. Tried all different combinations of cables and no dice. Don't know why. Different frequency type of HDMI I guess?

Still on the hunt for a cheap, mini-converter box that will upconvert Composite (standard def) Video to HDMI so I can use the HDMI input on the Small HD instead of that annoying Hiroshi.

Just a note on the Transvideo StarliteHD:

The recorded video file on the SD card does NOT playback out to an External monitor.

The file is ONLY viewable on StarliteHD screen when playing back.

This is a hardware limitation, this can NOT be upgraded with firmware.

I was hoping the StarliteHD would be my new on board recorder, I'm quite disappointed.

If anyone has specific questions about the StarliteHD, you can contact me privately.

I saw some references early on about the DP7HB being able to record h264 proxy files to the SD card but don't see any mention of it on the website. Has this feature been dropped?

I believe it has been dropped. I chatted with the guys at Cinegear, and apparently an early design/engineering decision accidentally precluded this feature. They seemed to think for a while they could implement it, but the delays were because they were discovering they'd accidentally locked themselves out of enabling that feature through software.

Are onboard recorders all that important anymore? I understand how they used to be when playback from camera was difficult or impossible. These days, the touch of a button on the camera does the job. Unplug the transmitter and you're good to go.

For me it is.... In most cases I can watch the take back to check the frame, focus, etc before I'm even back to one.

This is all without touching the camera body, trying to make my way to the director's monitor or annoying the camera assistants.

Probably not for everyone, but it works for me.

It's a handy feature to have on hand. I like being able to check my last shot without taking the camera offline or struggling how to do that on a new camera I'm not familiar with. I've been usings the Odyssey 7Q a lot lately when I want to have something to review but it's very lacking as an outdoor monitor. It's too bad this was dropped from the DP7HB would have made this a beast of a monitor, thought it's other qualities are still pretty fantastic. How do you that own them find it's image overall as far as color reproduction and accuracy goes? It seems like the OLED is touted more for this while there is little mention of the quality of the HBs image in most documentation.

  • 1 month later...

Dropped some change and picked a DP7HB up about a month ago now. Very impressed as far as viewability in the sun goes. Flying with no sunshade because I hardly need one. Overall color and picture reproduction is also very nice. Buttons are stiff which means no pushing to check tools while operating. I liked being able to do that on a touch screen O7Q. Wonder if they could make a mode so that the proximity sensors for the smart keys would actually activate the feature instead of just pulling up the menu (4 proximity sensors would mean 4 light touch keys). The horizon indicator does in fact seem to be a sick joke. I thought people were just exagerating about it but I don't think there's anything that can be done in firmware to improve just how bad it is. Overall I do really like it though.
