That is so true. At the shootout we had the 1400 nits Boland monitors and we could barely see them, because of lack of AR coating and optical bonding. Brightness means nothing if the sun or the sky is reflecting in your screen. The sun always wins...and the pictures to prove it...

As a broken-record reminder: nits are a measure of brightness but perceived contrast is equally as important when judging viewability of a Steadicam monitor. Famously, the TB6 was not as bright spec-wise as the PRO monitor but many (including me) felt that it provided a more useable image under many conditions, as it washed out less. This was quite literally observed at the monitor shoot-out.

I don't have a camera right now or else I would put it on my sled and run around with a go pro looking at it. It was a little tough to capture with an iphone what it really looks like.

You won't have any problem seeing what your shooting.

It's better without the polycarbonate screen protector, but absolutely usable with it on.

It's a thing called the sun. Eric, you never cease to amaze me with your comments.

Just letting you know what the conditions were.. You know, clear skies no clouds very bright sun...

it's not exactly a picture that tells a story, as a thumbnail it looks like a reflection off the screen. To let us know the conditions all yo have to say is "A clear day in direct sun" and guess what? Most everyone here will understand what the test conditions were.

and FYI the worst condition for a monitor is a layer of High Cirrus clouds and sun. it gives you a highly reflective white veil on the monitor and that's the best test. Clear and sunny doesn't really tell you that much

Tomorrow I will fire it up again and take off the screen protector.

I got a little busy today to really test it out.

I think a better test would be to put it side by side with a Cinetronic. (Then you can really take pot shots at it, Eric. J/k...)

I could see enough to focus in the sun.

Like I said before I don't remember what exactly the Cinetronic was like so I can't say its the same or worse.

Eric, I can't conjure the skies for you, I work with what I have. Maybe tomorrow there will be some cirrus for you.

Or I could set up an 8x silk and walk underneath it. That always gets me.

Here's a photo without the sun in the image.

Fire away Eric.... :-)

Also to qualify this image, the settings were backlight at 100

Brightness at 45

And contrast at 51

You can blast it up much brighter ( which I will do tomorrow )

I just usually like to see the image as the most colorful and vivid as it can be.

Cranking It would just be like looking at an over exposed image.

I just looked at the picture of the trans video 2000 nit and to me it looks over exposed... Am I wrong?

To see the frame is one thing but to see the "Image" is another.

I'm very curious to know how this monitor performs, as are a lot of people. Thank you for the attempt at posting the pictures, Joshua. It's difficult to judge a monitor's performance by a few still photos, however. I've got a few of my Cinetronic Gen 2 in the sun, and from a certain angle, there is no usable picture whatsoever. This is not to say the monitor doesn't perform well, nor does the Small HD, but there is always an angle you can find that will make any monitor look bad (except perhaps the old greenscreens...). I'm waiting to hear reviews from operators after having used these new monitors in the field for a while. That will tell me more than any single photograph.
