Arri 435ES - Arrimag 120 and 120s

Hi guys,

I need advice to fly with Arri 435.

Can I use Arri 435ES with normal Arrimag 120 with steadicam ? Or I need to fly with steadicam version (120s)?

What's the fly difference?

Hello Marco,

 

Technically speaking you can use both with no problem. The difference is CG's movement during shooting due to film travel within mags. Normal mags are designed to be confortable on shoulder and give more clearance at the bottom part. Because of this, the bottom film spool is slightly behind of the top spool. On steadicam mags however the spools are exactly on top of each other which translates to a less of a static balance change during a shoot.

 

If you have the option of choosing between the two try to get the steadicam mags. Normal mags can get very problematic for steadicam on longer takes or high speed conditions.

 

PS: also know that i am very jealous of you. It’s been almost a year since i last heard the sweet sound of a film camera. 2 mounts ago we used an Arricam Lite as a prop!

In addition to maintaining your balance as film rolls through the mag, 435 steadicam mags allow you to put the rig in conventional low-mode when coupled with the 435 100% video top. This combo makes for a very nicely weighted and balanced camera.

 

If you haven’t used the 435 before, know that it is 24V, and has a substantial power spike turning over, especially at high speeds. Good luck, and have a great shoot.
