I wear these:

with custom carbon kevlar orthotics inside them:

I've experimented with various trainers, these are by far the best solution I have come across.

Superb heel cup support, rigid from the middle of the foot arch back, but a flexible sole towards the front of the foot that still makes running comfortable.

Durable tough sole that grips well on all surfaces rough or smooth indoors/outdoors whatever.

They are also goretex lined and waterproof.

I just bought my second pair recently after my first pair lasted a solid 18 months of hard use.

My custom orthotics have lasted around 8 years with 2 minor refurbishments in that time period.

The shoes run in between £80-100 and the orthotics will set you back anywhere between £200-500 in the uk, but believe me when I say they are worth every penny.

...with custom carbon kevlar orthotics inside them:

I've gone entirely the other way. The orthotic approach was crippling my feet, and now I wear minimal shoes whenever the weather allows. I variously use these:

Fivefinger Komodo: http://www.vfinger.com/images/2012040817355619117.jpg

Merrell Trail Glove: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-krKQtGD6kxo/T7fFF66kpEI/AAAAAAAABr0/c4PSJZOU5v0/s1600/Merrell+Trail+Glove+(2).jpg

New Balance Minimus: http://www.irunfar.com/wp-content/uploads/New-Balance-Minimus-Trail1.jpg

The Komodos I find best for delicate work, but if I'm standing around on hard surfaces, the Minimus have a 3mm heel lift, which is more comfortable. The Trail Gloves are a little broad for my feet, so I wear them with mountaineering socks in colder weather. In freezing or wet weather, I revert to my good old Salomon Goretex: http://images.citysports.com/f/726/28361/24h/www.citysports.com/assets/product_images/182698_md.jpg but I increasingly find them spongy and unstable compared to the minimal shoes.

For me, lighter works better, but I assume that's a personal thing. If you do try any of these minimal shoes, work up to them gradually. The kind of support offered by modern trainers makes your feet lazy. You'll have to build up support muscles in your calves and arches before you'd want to go for a run or strap on a Steadicam.

All the best,

Chris

Have a few pairs of solomons depending on jobs.... For long hours e.g live programs or ob setups i will only wear my skechers and salomon due to long hours of rehearsals and standing being comfortable is the way to go.... And for ENG setups i'll go light e.g new balance 500 series and nike lunar as i would be running most of the time but have not tried the 5 fingers of vibram yet... But to date this salomon really helps for long operating http://www.salomon.com/sg/product/xr-crossmax-neutral.html :)

Hey Sanjay,

I'm really looking forward to seeing you at Cinec!

I did a commercial shoot on Friday, mostly on the Steadiseg. It was a busy day, and I didn't get around to changing out of my street Salamons. Then I had to do a slow tracking shot in the vest, and I couldn't figure out why I felt so unstable. My foot and ankle muscles were working too hard in balancing me. Then I remembered to change to the 5F, and immediately I felt grounded. You really have to give them a try.

OK, they do look silly.

All the best,

Chris

I don't think they look silly... they look comfy... but then again, I don't give a rats a$$ what people think of my cloths to begin with...

I like them, nobody else on set needs to! As long as I do my job and the production is happy, they couldn't care less either.

Did a very fast move on creaky wooden floor with dialog the other day. The sound guy only made out the actors. ;)

On the current feature at the beginning people made fun of me... now at least five crew members are looking into them including some grips and the director...

Convincing them all... one at the time.

Fly safe,

Erwin

I have made similar experiences :)

For me it's 5F all the way!

Interesting, I saw these and think they might be able to accommodate one of my weird orthotics that I have to wear to walk normally, think you people might have tempted me out of my meindl's at some point....
