R/C helli with micro steadicam!

I have been interested in remote control hellicopter filming for some time now. One problem is the small size of the hellicopter that can make it quite un-steadi in the air. I wounder if it could be possible to design a small steaicam arm that would hold a small sled and camera, then it could be fixed to the R/C hellicopter.

The cam only has a lens and a box with the ccds in it, and so is quite light. The arm that holds the mini sled and cam wouldnt have to hold much wieght and could be verry small. I think the hole micro steadicam and cam could be lifted by a good R/C helli.

If anybody has any ideas i'd love to hear them!

Cheers

Matt.

Matt, though I don't know much about heli´s, I think that it cannot work, for the same reason as you already mention in your first post: the unstable behaviour of a RC heli.

Remember: when you hold a steadicam on your body, you keep the connection to your body (the socketblock) in a relatively fixed position and orientation. That way you keep the sled at a certain place too. Same with a hardmount, that only works if your vehicle is not rolling and tilting on it´s axis.

Transfer this to your heli and you know that it does all that, the rolling and tilting and only sophisticated electronics can suppress that.

Other than that, anything sticking out of a heli is subject to a major downwash and we all know that wind does to a steadicam.

And I once saw footage of a stupid manouvre of a helicopter pilot, flying only 4-5 meters above the see, he threw out a line that was catched by someone on a boat with motor troubles.

Just the mere pulling of this man, not even the boat, caused the helicopter to become unstable, wiggle and crash into the sea.

Basically, the two systems bite eachother.

just my thoughts, of course.

Have a look at the steadicam part too! steadicam! with a twist

they have been using this weird custom built bit of kit since 95.

...Well there went my sugestion of a fully remote head on a Steadi...

Good thing it's remote too, as the (1st?) Opp has no monitor..

Hmm.. I wonder why they blurred the opp's face..

SIX gyros? I wonder where this baby get's it's power? Maybe there's a small reactor in the bottom pod too.

Did anybody watch the ford KA video on the hovercam page ?

Was a great add but i never seen it on tv in the uk. Not surprising realy the adds we get in the uk are normaly diabolical.

Robin

hey Matt.

If you are interested to this as a project and want to make something to work with micro cams as you have mentioned I can either make you or help you make a gyro stabilised remote head for the cam to skip vibrations, pitch and yau errors of the heli and also remote control it.
