Teradek Bolt

I'll stick with my Recon for now. Waiting to hear how it holds up after it gets put through the ringer.

 

I was at a prep last week with a DIT buddy, who was on a commercial shoot with one of the beta models. It was on Steadicam and he said it absolutely spanked the performance of my Recon (we both worked on a shoot w/ my old Recon). He said line-of-sight was over 200' and it was dealing with walls very well. Also, he said latency was zero, or next to it... This is the kind of stuff that had/has me excited about this product!

 

If all goes well, I'll def be getting a second unit to just keep with my camera.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's results. One thing to keep in mind is that testing a transmitter is a complicated process. They can all excel in certain situations and suck in others. On really needs to test not just indoors and outdoors but in several variations of both where the topography and ambient RF vary, to get a full picture of performance. I'm going to put my Bolt through an upcoming 14 day location/stage shoot before I make any decisions or announce my findings (unless it's a non-starter...)

Just fyi..if anyone has ordered and wants to get a cable made in advance, the power plug that goes into bolt is a Lemo FGG.0B

which I believe is the same one Alexa uses for 12v acc power

Thanks for the info! Luckily, Teradek ships the BOLT w/ a p-tap connector and an AC plug for the receiver so I'll be able to power it for its initial test, tonight.

Yes, it's a FGG.0B.302.CLAD52, or CLAD42, depending on the diameter of the cable you want to use. I just ordered a bunch of them to make cables for the bolt. Can't confirm pinout yet though; until I get the Bolt in my hands to confirm I'm not soldering anything yet. On the Alexa, that port is 1: GND, 2: +12V, but on a Digital Bartech, which also uses a 2-pin 0B connector, 1 is power, 2 is GND.

In my experiences ARRI has always used FISCHER plugs not LEMO - similar but not compatible with each other.

The 12V accessory out on the Alexa is a Lemo part. The 24V RS outs are Fischer.

 

Good to know, although I will say that I've never relied on a camera being able to power any of the accessories I own and use. It's a safer bet for me to make sure I can power all of my devices independently of whatever camera I may be using. This way there are no surprises when You and the A.C. both want the same port on the camera (this still happens from time to time with ARRI start/stop from the Preston) I realize that this isn't practical for everyone, nor does every sled have the connections available to power more than the basics but it does make sure no matter what system you are saddled with you're good to go.
