Teradek Bolt

Another question for Teradek people in the thread: have you run into problems with the Bolt shutting off Anton Bauer batteries, probably related to the batteries detecting they're charging another battery and faulting out? Curious to hear thoughts.

Hey William,

I haven't heard of any issues at this time with Anton Bauers. Did you have a problem with yours? We can run a test today just to be sure.

I plug a Hyperdeck which has an internal battery on the ABs with no problem. I don't think this would be the issue. Check the polarities of your connector and the polarity of your P-tap (sometimes it's inverted for some reasons) with a multimeter. I took the habbit of checking the polarity every time I plug on a different battery system, a bad wiring and boom goes your electronic...

Based on all of this chat it seems there are already a few units in the field being used by forum members. Can anyone offer more feedback on the quality of the transmitter in different environments and distances? Any multi RX users?

Yeah, getting a little bored reading about all the shipping and billing drama. Would love to hear some stories about how this unit actually works in the field. How does it compare to the $18,000 Boxx Meridien which is, in my opinion, by far the best HD transmitter in our industry today.

Well, we tried to use one this morning that we received, but the powering system malfunctioned so we can't change it. Teradek is doing an RMA for us already. I called 3 times this morning and nobody answered their phones in the support department. Finally go thru and their support narrowed it down that the powering system was not working properly. Nice QC guys.

Wile it was briefly working from the half charged internal power source, it broke up when 3 people were standing between the TX and RX at 50 feet? Daytime exterior.

I dunno if I'd bother comparing it to an $18,000 system. Definitely interested in how it compares to the Arrow, Recon, and Camwave.

With any luck, the breakup from 50' away is related to low power. I'd be interested to hear the results from repeating that with an externally powered unit.

Also interested in hearing more about customer support.

My only previous understanding of Teradek is from horror stories about the Cube, so i unfairly wrote off the Bolt and Teradek awhile ago. Hoping to change my mind.

Preliminary thought/edit: the Bolt only accepts 6-16v power, and I probably gave it more.

William,

About how much power did you give the Bolt off your Anton Bauer? I imagine that could be the cause of the power failure.

I had the unit inside a shower (another Op was on Camera) and the signal was going through 2 walls (and a tiled-shower) and about 45' away to village with only one case of breakup in the 15 minutes it was in there.

Sucks to hear that others aren't having as good luck as I've had. That said, I think one of the 4 battery level lights has died or was stillborn.

Mike: Dtap from an Anton Bauer battery plate into the Bolt with the cable included with the package. 12v unregulated, but no more than 14.4v. Also failed to charge via the AC adapter as Chris at Teradek was helping me troubleshoot over the phone. This was brand new out of the Pelican box it was delivered in.
