The buyer is from LA and I am in New York. Does anyone have any advice on how to move forward? It's hard to have someone send a big check before they get the gear. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem sending someone (check, wire transfer, paypal, whatever) a large sum of money if I knew them before hand. Even if I wasn't friends with them, but just knew them through this forum, and they were active participants here, I would be fine with that. You're pretty active here. Your posts can be researched. You can be researched online. You'd probably be pretty easy to find if you were going to screw someone. At the same time, I don't think I would let large amounts of gear go without receiving payment first. When people are scraping together large sums of money, often times things fall through for one reason or another... or there are delays... etc. Even if they're not necessarily being malicious, it could still become a headache for you. It has to be shipped anyway right? What's another $500 for a plane ticket on a purchase of this size. Or, you could ship it to Tiffen in Glendale, have it checked out with instructions to only release it when you give the okay. If they'll do that as a courtesy for you. If the buyer cant fly out to go through it all with you, then sending it to Tiffen is the best bet (if they'll do it!) I did that exactly that when I purchased a 2nd hand Pro arm from someone in Europe. I paid a deposit ($1,000 i think it was), He sent it to Pro, got it checked out and subsequently serviced. When I got the all clear on the arm from Pro, paid the seller the full amount, and once payment cleared, he emailed and got it released from Pro and I arranged shipping to Australia from there. I have purchased gear without doing this in the past and its nerve-wracking! Was a big gamble, which has luckily paid off for me, but can just imagine the horror stories would out weigh the good! Have the buyer pay for the shipping first off, then you send the rig to LA, either to Tiffen if they're cool with it, or another operator or friend you know and trust in LA. The buyer can go check it out and then send you the money. Once the funds clear, let your contact in LA know it's clear to release the gear. PS. The payment should be made by wire transfer if at all possible. Maybe a Cashiers check or even personal check from a bank where you have a branch near you. NYC and LA are big cities and should have 30 different major banks if not 50. That way you can walk into a branch and cash it, this way there is no chance of the check being denied AFTER it's been deposited and cleared. Which has happened. If I was the buyer, I'd jump on a plane, check it out, and then go to my bank branch near you, WITH you and have them make your Cashiers check right there and fly back with the gear. But like was mentioned before, if it's an operator you know or has a good presence here and is easy to find, it should be no problem. Just my thoughts... A few years back I sold a mass spec and turbo pump and used escrow.com. They do of course charge a fee, but may be useful as a last resort.
