bobgilles Posted April 30, 2005 Report Share Posted April 30, 2005 I think that I can handhold an Aaton 35III just as smooth as Fig operated the Panasonic DV cam in his vid, but I will have to say that it adds needed mass and control of the light camcorders. If one thinks about the physics being applied with this wheel thingy, it sure looks as though there are essentially stabilizing antlers- arcing around the camcorder, instead of being attached just above a camcorder. Hardly original. However, I do admire any sort of out-of-the-box thinking, regardless of function or industry. Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted July 27, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 27, 2006 The 2 biggest problems with this device are that one holds it far from the center of gravity, imparting the greatest possible angular disturbance (most shakicams have at least this right, you can grab them close to the c.g....) and 2) the same muscles that are doing the heavy lifting are doing the aiming (micro ounces)... i.e., it lacks a gimbal to separate the efforts. CVertainly not my favorite item, but they go out a lot and our sales department sells a few as well. It does help smooth a shot for at least a short time, then my wrists start hurting. We just had a guy who shoots from a paraglider come in and hack one up in our machine shop to turn into a hanging rig with a gyro for an HDV camcorder. I did not use it as a Steadicam substitute (I used my full sized rig with a 15lb hunk of iron under the camera). I did find it really useful for a chase scene, shooting from vehicles. It worked especially well for background plates for parts of the chase. The director used it for some 2nd unit walking footage and while not quite steadicam, it looked remarkably good and less distracting than hand held. No longer do we have to deal with outrageous vendor R&D costs nor sending units back for repair. The shot results sequence is a little long, so forward to minute 6:00ish for genius last words b/4 you stop it.
