Premium Members Bud Kremp S.O.C. Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 Hi All, Just curious, I may be behind on reading all the posts here, but have we given away the standard gear rental rate of "$1,000 per day 3 Day Week & $1,000 for day play"? If we have collectively given it away then fine. I just would prefer not to come acrossed as a hard nose holding out for what I THOUGHT were the standards. I received a call for a hit ABC show and was told the rental rate was $600 for day play!? One thing I thought we were holding out on was $1,000 a day on gear. Sure our individual skill sets may affect the daily rate, but gear? Let me know if I'm crazy, but since I just did a day on another ABC show and got the $1,000, I smelled something fishy. Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 The only show that pulled that crap on me was Revenge. They wouldn't budge so I said fine...$600 for my sled, arm and vest -- nothing else (at least the hourly was above the LA norm). A friend of mine was directing, but the upm was either a manipulative fcuktard or a moron (there's usually no in-between). Miserable day. Wish I didn't do it. Premium Members Alfeo Dixon SOC Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 ...have we given away the standard gear rental rate of "$1,000 per day 3 Day Week & $1,000 for day play"? Hey Bud, What they are doing is taking our $1000/day 3Day week and pro-rating it... you should bring it to their attention that the standard rate IS infact $1000/day for a 3 day week. This is a real sticker and they should be reminded that WE steadicam operators are infact already discounting our rates for weekly hire. All they do is take budgets from one show and roll it over to the next (templates). So they will look and see that the steadicam rental was only $600/day. So that go with that as the daily instead of the prorated weekly discounts added. That is why I will ALWAYS send in an invoice with the FULL non discounted rate and then add lines taking away the discounted rates. It causes small ripple affects between accounting and upm's and they sometimes want me to adjust my numbers to fit theirs and I say "Sorry, but my accountant told me to do this way, so that I can track the discounts and concessions I have given you." It helps me recover my losses at tax time.
Premium Members John Stout Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 Alfeo, What a great way to do it. We do our billing like this for everything not just Steadicam. It gives us the greatest flexibility to make a project work, but not reduce the market level. I wish more people did this. I think it also reminds the client the value of what they are getting.
Premium Members Alfeo Dixon SOC Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 I think it also reminds the client the value of what they are getting. If you really wanted to remind them, just send the full rate invoice and once they freakout about it, then send over a credit memo for the discounts  official disclaimer: ***not responsible for any delays in your payments***
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 yes Alfeo, that is exactly what they are doing -- and to a certain extent it doesn't matter what you bill them...they pay what they want to pay you. I was doing it for a friend so I let it slide, but I'd never do it again. The fight for getting your $3k/week on a 4 day week is an old one and usually lost in my experience (and nearly everyone I have talked to about it). Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted January 29, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 No such thing as th three day week being the norm anymore. Now it's a five day week. That doesn't change the day play rate though you still charge the $1,000-$1.500/day for the rig on three day or less call
Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted January 30, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 Yep, that pro-rating stuff is out there and my Deal Memo shows them EXACTLY what a day equates to in the 'weekly' rate and portions thereof. Put it in writing. Stick to it!

Premium Members TJ Williams Jr. Posted June 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 13, 2013 I want to revitalize this conversation and steer it towards feature films. I primarily work in low budget features (Tier 0 - Tier 2 films), and the current one I'm negotiating on is asking for some incredible deals. The current project is a Tier 2 film shooting for 5 weeks. They want to rent the steadicam kit for $2500 for the show... now this may only be for 5 days or so, but still thats $500 / day!!!! Is this a low budget feature standard down here in LA? Normally I would only see rates this low on a Tier 0 or Tier 1 project, and I didnt expect it on this one. Honestly I was completely blind sided... they also only want to do a $10 / hour steadicam bump, which is fairly low from what I've normally done. Anyone who work in movies have info to this regard? What do you guys do for long form projects on a weekly rental or pay to play? Also what do you guys normally get for a bump on steadicam days? Thanks for the info everyone. Cheers, -TJ
Premium Members matthew pearce Posted June 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 13, 2013 On webisodes, tier one, or tier two features hold out for the $1000 day rental. I only discount the gear if they are buying me out for the whole show. The bump is what you can get but until you are willing to say "no thank you" you're not going to get what you deserve. Premium Members Twojay Dhillon Posted June 14, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 14, 2013 Alfeo -- that's excellent, I'm switching to this format of billing today.
Premium Members Ramon Engle Posted June 20, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 20, 2013 Alfeo, Great advice. I'm switching to this format as well. So tired of the day playing squeeze that goes on. Ramon
Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted June 21, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 21, 2013 I used to manage a boutique rental house, so I know how important it is to show all of the discounts you are giving to the client. It is a definite must!
