Amazing Live-to-air Steadicam running shot

That was exhilarating! Just when I was thinking "yeah so?" that running section came along to blow my mind. Feels like we are seeing a lot of ballsy work out of the broadcast sector these days, from the Eurovision Segway jump-off to Job's great 360 shot a few months back and now this.

I'm guessing there may be some people who have never seen the original that this routine was based on--since it's one of my all-time favorite videos, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex1qzIggZnA. Spike Jonze and his fictional "Torrance Community Dance Group" perform an impossibly silly dance routine to an unsuspecting crowd outside a Westwood movie theater, all shot on consumer cameras (a real novelty for an official music video back in '98).

Anyway--great job, Dom!

I'd also be curious to know if they had a contingency angle to cut to at any time in case there was a bump or crash or anything. Quite risky through all those doorways and hallways if it's live and the only camera available. ....though if he did crash, would the talent have stopped to help, or just jumped over him? Lots of questions. Glad we never had to find out the "what ifs".

Like Charles mentioned, there's definitely some ballsy stuff going on these days...does it seem like it's mostly in Europe? I have a feeling this op, if you were to ask him, "Hey what happens if you crash?" would probably have responded something like, "What are you talking about?"

I always enjoy looking for rig shadows on shots like this. Looks like a 1.5" post to me (though I wish the video wasn't at 360p resolution).

I'd also be interested to hear from him about the shot though, the gear he used, and how much rehearsal and planning it took to execute.

Rehearsed twice in the dress,No contingency once live, standby cabled hand helds ditched when we went on air, it was the second routine in the showI've got an Artemis sled with a Sony P1 camera Canon J14 lens Boxx Meridian wireless system with data control, return vision and a prompting screen.I use a g70 arm on the live stuff cos I trim it on the fly during the show depending what the shot is.
