I'm starting a Pilot on the 1st and I need a video system for my sled. I hate the Boxx configuration and size, not to mention the microwave swirling around either my head or ......

So I'm considering the two systems, and right now I'm leaning towards the BOLT simply because it's all SDI. Doing episodic and movies I live in the SDI world and HDMI scares me.

Now here's the question, what new and exciting upgrades do we think the BOLT is going to unvail at NAB. Am I gonna be the schmuck to buy the last transmitter of this iteration, only to see all the post NAB models far surpass my untimely purchase? Is everyone gonna get a 10% NAB discount AND newer stuff????? That would suck

Maybe I should learn to love the HDMI and get on the Paralinx bandwagon. They make the promise that all their models will be upgradable, and they are really attentive when it comes to communicating with me about their system.

I hate obsolence.

I guess I'm just looking for ideas and insights.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

To my knowledge, all transmitters (boxx, idx, teradek, paralynx) are based on the same aminon chipsets and transmitting on the same 5-6 ghz bandwidth, so pick your poison.

Plus the transmitting power is limited to 50-80 mW. Compare that to your 1 to 2 watt IPhone.

I just bought a Teradek Bolt Pro package last week and I think it is worth every penny.

I don't think they will release a newer system since Bolt Pro is fairly new.

In a worst case, if they release a new system, at least you know you are not the only one suffering in NYC.

So go for it.

Jamie,

I looked into the Boxx specs when it came out and I realized I was going to have one parked next to my head for ten months on "Blue Bloods." It is WiFi and lower wattage than an iPhone. Not sure it's good for you, but at least it's not a Microwave. Probably a lot less harmful than our old Modulus and Canatrans too.

As for the Bolt versus the Pralinx, let me know what you do as I'm in the same boat as I end another long term show which was using the Boxx (so far leaning towar the Bolt because of the HDSDI).

Paralinx Arrow plus here, couldn't be happier.

I do wish there was a cable made that went from the Tx or the Rx, straight to an AB P Tap without having the USB in between, but maybe soon.

I hear good things are going to be shown/unveiled by Paralinx at NAB.

So far, I'm happy.

Bought a Bolt ( non internal battery version) , it stopped working 20 minutes after receiving it, I overnighted it back to them, they were supposed to return a replacement unit for Sat delivery, nothing, Monday morning came and went, nothing, when I called and asked where it was they calmly told me they would not be able to deliver and they would be happy to ship the replacement unit to me in Italy, If I would not have called them, they may never had told me that their promise to ship the replacement unit overnight to me was false. They were very nice on the phone but I could not risk the replacement unit having an issue. Ordered the Paralinx, overnight, everything worked, and has continued working. I'm happy.

I ordered both (Bolt Pro & Arrow) from Abel Cine but took only Bolt Pro.

Here are my reasons:

1. I like Teradek's power connector (2-pin Lemo 0b) and i don't like USB power of Paralinx.

2. My sled (Pro/XCS hybrid) has HD-SDI connection so i can mount Bolt on top with the camera or bottom (great for low mode) using the sled's SDI connection. Bolt pro transmitter also has HD-SDI loop out so I can connect to a recorder or monitor.

3. Don't want to deal with additional HDMI converter or cables.

Both solutions are still great deal compared to my old Modulus & CIT diversity set up and I will buy Arrow if I have a job with HDMI centric since it is so inexpensive.

I was using a Teradek Bolt on a shoot last week and it worked great, for the most part. In the afternoon hours it appears that the transmitter was overheating and would stop transmitting. When we let it cool for a bit, it operated fine, but then would heat up and stop working again.

Has anyone else had this occur?

The bolt is ok, but isnt that reliable... Ive had range and reliability issues with it on every shoot ive used it on.

wait for something better...

Arrow SDI ??

Andrew,

Did you send your Bolt in for the complimentary hardware updates? We've made some significant changes, including a new board with 6-28V tolerance.
