Premium Members Claus Stuhlweissenburg Posted April 15, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 Seems I'm traveling more and more lately. I have a c stand with a turtle base but I was wondering if anyone was using something that was more compact, lightweight and practical
Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted April 19, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 19, 2013 Check out the collapsible C-stand Tiffen sells with their smaller rigs (pilot, scout, etc.). It has a turtle base and packs into a very small and manageable travel bag. http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=steadicam&itemnum=601-7910
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 19, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 19, 2013 I think Andrew works for the department of redundancy department. I personally hate ising c-stands -- they flex way too much if you have a full sized rig (I don't know what you fly). I gave up and just use the American Grip combo steadicam stand (the new version has a much wider base -- I have never needed a bag. For shipping I loosen the three allens and the whole telescoping secion comes apart and fits nicely into a pelican 1650 with other aks. It is heavier than a c-stand but much more secure if you do fly a heavy load.
Premium Members James Davis Posted April 19, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 19, 2013 What Ron said, I started off with a shitty C-stand and switched to one of American Grip stands, unlike a c-stand it doesn't flex like crazy and feel like it's going to snap when you put a heavy rig on it, also it doesn't really need a sandbag on the bottom to stay stable thanks to the weight and wide base, with a bit of padding around it, it fits perfectly into a tall ronford tripod case. There are probably some smaller case alternatives around if you look though.
Premium Members Claus Stuhlweissenburg Posted April 20, 2013 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 Thanks for the input. I'll look into it
Premium Members James Davis Posted April 20, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 Reading Rons post his idea of taking it apart and putting it into a 1650 is pretty good, probably easier for transport too than a bulky tripod case. I'll look into that myself next time I need to fly with gear.
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 20, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 My gear is mid-transit right now, but can snap a pic when (if?) if it shows up in a few days.
Premium Members James Davis Posted April 20, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 Yeah please that'd be cool mate, I think I get what you're describing but it would definitely me useful to see how you disassembled it and packaged it for sure just to confirm my thoughts if anything. Cheers James
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 23, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2013 here are some pics of the stand in two pieces. It is pictured in a Pelican 1630 (the length is actually about .5 inch shorter than a 1650)
Premium Members James Davis Posted April 23, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2013 Thanks Ron, that's great, I never thought of packing it like that, very helpful.
