Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted August 5, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2013 Well I never thought I would be asking this but...... I have a shoot coming up in Sept/Oct where I have to shoot some fast moving large doggy POV type shots and finally it would be useful to use a MoVi or similar type stabilized rig that should be held at, yes, scrotum height. Would like to put an Alexa M or Epic on there as this would be intercut with Arri Raw recorded footage, but would settle for DSLR if there is no other alternative. Any ideas where this can be rented and is there yet a rig capable of carrying the larger cameras yet (or by Sept or Oct.)? Not sure where this will fit into the schedule. Guess other option is Pogo or Doggie cam, but I like the stabilized option.

Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted August 6, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 Have you tried contacting Freefly directly? They might be the best people to give you an answer to your questions. Also contact all the other companies like http://www.liquidskycinema.com/besteady.php which "is set to ship for September with an estimated 6-10 days"
Premium Members Ken Nguyen Posted August 6, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 For a doggy POV a Fig Rig or handheld (hold the camera CG at the camera handle by 1 hand) will do the job. Steadicam in low high mode also works fine in most cases. Cheers, Ken Nguyen.
Premium Members Aaron Medick SOC Posted August 6, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 I believe the first few units of the movi will release at the end of this month. As far as I know nothing movi like has made it to market yet. Also the first movi will be weight limited to an epic with super speed and digital Bartech combo weight range. Hope that is the info you're looking for. Aaron
Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted August 6, 2013 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 Thanks guys. Hugh from Freefly has emailed me; trying to get answers from him. Not sure if they are in the rental market or just selling. Was looking for an owner. Ken, thanks for the suggestions. I've done quite a few of these shots in the past and this one might need to be too fast for full rig Steadicam. That's why I thought the Movi might be the right tool. Premium Members AndreasKielb Posted August 7, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 7, 2013 Looks like you gonna be alright with renting it from Freefly. Just to keep it at the back of your mind we are also nearly ready for market with a brushless stabilizer for the Epic and enventually Alexa M and might provide a rig in September via my partners agency in the USA ( http://www.flightcopter.com ). Best regards, Andreas http://www.portahead.de
Premium Members David Steel Posted October 8, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 8, 2013 Hi Lawrence, i know this is a late reply. but thought id tell you how i did similar shots on the latest evil dead movie. it was of the evil force flying through the woods, and i had a epic with either a 12mm or 14mm prime on a light weight steadicam rig in low mode. it was very light and i could sprint through the woods for hundreds of meters. and the footage had a really nice balance of a handheld feel but still had the smoothness of a stabilizer. Though it is probably to late now but thought i'd share. Dave

Premium Members Nicholas Davidoff Posted October 9, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 9, 2013 Just curious why not use a lightweight steadicam rig in low mode?
Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted October 9, 2013 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted October 9, 2013 Just curious why not use a lightweight steadicam rig in low mode? First off, great work on Homeland this season Nick! It's all about the camera. Despite the fact that I don't have a dedicated "running rig", we are shooting with Alexa XT cameras with internal Codex recording (I mention this because they are a few pounds heavier than standard Alexa) and Master primes. I don't care what rig you are using, that's a heavy package for this sort of thing and not conducive to chasing or leading fast dogs. Add the Klassen vest and PRO arm for more bulk and weight. Also we shot in a hallway with slight angles through doorways with tricky clearance issues. Here is what the real problem was. I saw this stuff in the script months ago, tried to plan ahead, had a discussion with the DP who insisted the director was not interested in doggy POV shots and chasing footage. So I did not push getting in a lightweight camera/Movi or Pogo set-up, maybe with an Epic. Couple that with them wanting to shoot everything in Arri Raw and I found myself where I was last week: handed story boards that had exactly the kind of shots I was hoping to prepare for and sent off with a small crew to shoot this stuff. Wound up doing a few angles off the rig which I did not think was fast enough and eventually hard mounting the camera to my butt dolly base and sending the grips off and running which in the end produced some pretty dynamic and alive footage. I do think with the right tools it could have been much better.
