Moderators Janice Arthur Posted June 24, 2005 Moderators Report Share Posted June 24, 2005 Hi; I came up with this idea a decade ago and I've toyed with it for years. I've finally gotten someone to make a good one. File this under "food for thought" How about a clamp under the gimbal (where your hand would be) and a little arm that reaches up at an angle to a short post that now lets you operate without reaching and without having to operate above the gimbal. The advantage is is that you now have a lever and you get much more strength out of all those hard to press into action hand motions that Lo-mode always seems to make harder. The disadvantage is is that you have to be nicer to it or you get too much control. Also you have to swish pan with your whole body but I think the handle has some validity in all other situations. When I get the photos I'll add some but now its a real thing.
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted June 24, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 24, 2005 Janice, you are not the only one toying, for sure :D I did make something like you suggest here years ago (1998) and it worked exactly as you said: you have to be very nice to it or you move it all over the place. I was at that time only starting in Steadicam, with little experience so that might be a reason as well. My construction was a bit too flexible (too thin aluminium pipe) so it was reacting with a delay, after which it "overshoot". Now that I think about it, it might work well with well balanced neutral CG rigs, so you need only a tiny bit of steering power. But it will make it harder to operate on high-speed/action shots as you easily put too much force on the handle. I am interested in what you have been making. You have some pictures? Cheers, Layton.
