My Sh*& Don't Stink and Yours Doesn't Either. What's the best shot you've done and why?

Ok, here it goes. This was a music video for The Killers I did a while back. Not much steadicam, and its a video, so everything is cut up. However, I think it's a fun video, and I did like the performance scenes outside on the balcony with the Las Vegas skyline in the reflection. It's not technical at all, but it was a nice effect with the reflection. There are a few shots of out actress, Bella Heathcote, moving about the casino and a couple quick running shots at the very end. I wish I had a say in the edit, because there are definitely some questionable shots of mine they used where I know we had much better material.

I wish I had something better to contribute, but at the moment this is all I can think of thats on youtube. Ill do a little more research, and hopefully come up with something more steadicam friendly.

Heres a music vid i did a few years back. Single take, although they added a cut in post as the label decided they wanted the clip to finish how it started with a VFX so needed to make up some time.

Very low budget, 5D with a 15mm lens cropped extremely tight (directors choice) Shot 1080 25p and slowed down by 50% in post (hence the motion artifacts)..

This was done with my first rig.. the Steadicam Pilot..

Funnily enough i've done a few oner's since and i havent liked them as much as this. Wish i had the original take, everything looked great at real time.

Thomas, I agree with ya about the stuff wight he city reflected in the glass. The whole video is cool and your stuff works great. Must have been a fun shoot running all over Vegas. And you got to shoot a Killers video!

Joe, Sweet stuff and thanks for posting. There's something about steadi and slow mo that's completely mesmerizing right? How did they move the glasses on the table before it starts to shake up and move all over?

Thanks for posting guys. Keep em coming. Who's next?

Wow. This entire thread has been great and inspiring. Very impressed with everyone's work. Way to go guys!

I wanted to point out that the constant switching, marks to hit, and architecture to frame, Fabian and Kyle did superb work. So beautiful. The horizons were solid. Great touch. Beautiful pacing. I really enjoyed watching. Thank you for posting.

ER stuff was pretty badass too. Love how fast the show moves. The switching, the marks, the intense emotion to capture. Grew up watching the early seasons. Very impressed and very happy to be a part of a community that includes you guys. The ones that muscled through. Thank you.

I'm posting only to pay tribute to Dave. Several years ago on the West Wing "live" show, Dave carried Alan Alda from an off stage dressing room to stage. Alan climbed a set of stairs, Dave went up a ramp meeting Alan at the top. (I was on sticks for the show).

Here's the back story on Kimmel. We get one pass at each song during afternoon sound check and then do the show live to tape a couple of hours later. Director told me Avril wanted to start from an Army jeep, climb stairs and go onstage. Could I just lens it from the stage and carry to a reverse? I had a flashback to the West Wing experience and asked the grips if they could rig the ramp the roadies use. Fifteen minutes later we did our one and only rehearsal.

No need to watch the entire video and I'm not pretending that this was difficult or even good. But rather an example of how a little creativity can add some production value to an otherwise boring shot.

Kris,

I don't even remember that shot but glad you did. Very cool. Love the last minute improv of the load in ramp and you're right, a much cooler shot. Must be cool to be in front of that large of an audience. I've never really done something that big. Thanks for sharing.

This one is unreleased from my recorder so it hasn't been colored yet. The DP asked me to make nice slow moves and find interesting frames to pause on. I went into the location with a viewfinder and picked out a few spots and we blocked the actor accordingly. We did 17 takes and I chose to only take one break(it was a fairly light epic package.) This is take 10 I believe, I don't know which one they picked. Out of the 17 takes there were only one or two bumps for me, the actor was having a little but of trouble getting through the whole thing. He messed up on this one but saved it quite well.

I like it because I was very involved with the blocking and I feel like the energy feels right.

Fun stuff. Thanks for posting. So great to be a larger part of the process like that! Those slow calculating shots are often the hardest right? But in the end, perhaps the most fun.

It's funny because as I move into the final stages of my career (I can only guess/hope) I find that while I once loved doing those long ass shots that never stopped, I'm much more interested in slower more elegant moves now and working on finesse stuff. Perhaps it's all the geritol kicking in. Anyone else feel that way?

Awesome. Who's next?

Igor, that was really a fun shot and very well done! And one take only, that is really great. Like the videos I saw of the comet streaking across the sky in Russia, nothing seems to get a reaction from the Russians! Oh yes, another car crash, couple of dead bodies…...

And to the others that posted, all really nice. It's great to see this stuff. Keep em coming.
