My Sh*& Don't Stink and Yours Doesn't Either. What's the best shot you've done and why?

Have this oner I did recently. Hardest part was the stairs and the kitchen. Coming down the stairs they were dimming the lights to the song so I was very focused on my feet and feeling the framing. The kitchen section was extremely tight with maybe an inch to spare even with the monitor and batteries crammed all the way in.

Don't ask me why they are all walking backwards again... I always suggest flipping around them and leading to no avail.

This is really an awesome thread Dave. I'm really enjoying watching every single video on here. Mad respect to all you operators.

I've been operating for 2 years, so I still have a long ways to go. Despite living in Hong Kong (limited resources and ops) I've gotten a lot of encouragement from operators around the world and the boys from Tiffen being super helpful with me.

Here's oner I did a few months back. It's not my best work, but I am proud to be able to get closer to becoming a better operator. What makes this video even more special is having Garrett Brown skype me and go through the video frame by frame (He saw a different take). I know my mistakes and what I can do to improve, but hearing it all from him just makes it that much more special.

The video was shot using my zephyr with an FS700.

I have a pic I took on skype with Garrett, dunno how to post it here, but I sure wish I had a snap shot of his set up. He used his ipad with the video and bounced the image off a vanity mirror to the computer camera so I could see him looking at it hahahahah.

Fly safe everybody.

Bryant,

Sweet stuff and yeah, I can see how that Kitchen was a killer. Nice maneuvering. Not that it was you but I liked the green screen cards they held in behind them. Cool effect. I have to ask, what is this though? Are these folks popular? Is it a vanity project?

Scottie,

Some nice moves in there. And how awesome to have Garret go through it with you, and with him doing his own little mirror video gag to boot. Classic. That's what i always loved about this community. Stuff like Garrett himself being willing to sit with you and go over shots in order to make you a better op. I can't imagine how much fun that was. Good on ya for reaching out to him and I'm not surprised at all that he offered his thoughts. You're on your way.

Sorry to get all tangential in this thread, but please do elaborate!

This sounds like an excellent addition to my kit.

There is a lot of info on recorders on this forum. the cheapest is the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. I use one on my Zephyr for which I created a custom bracket to mount it on the battery hanger and it works like a charm. http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=18090&hl=%2Bhyperdeck+%2Bshuttle+%2Bzephyr

I was tired of waiting for producer to send me a copy of the files to review what I did. now I have it and can even replay a take just for me on my own screen. Just don't share the images unless the production is ok with it.

Now back to posting more awesome shots from everyone!!!

A little one take I did during a live-to-youtube show in May, director requested for a steadicam to follow Carly Rae Japsen and to frame the LED wall at the back (they wanted to feature the video compliation while she performs) as best as possible.

just one rehearsal the day before, and wham! a lot of unpredictable movements, I did the best I could.

segment starts at 0:15

Thank you for watching!

Hey guys after a long year at work Ive sat down on a Saturday night and came across this discussion. Firstly thanks dave for starting it and I hope in the future many people will add to it?? I have in the past decade at times emailed operators and asked how they have done things including dave and have read with interest they responses to what they did and how they over came obstacles.

Here is my shot that I did this year and Im incredibly happy with it:

Its from a show called Ripper Street and is shot at a studio in Dublin,

I have a Pro Rig / Pro Arm / Walter Klassen vest and this was Alexa and P-Vintage glass… (please excuse the compression.)

We went to the tech recce 4 weeks before and we decided to start the shot on a horse and cart with a platform rigged on the back to set the scene in Victorian London in the Post Office. With the idea that you think that its just a wide and then it would cut, but actually we carry on.

The day of the shoot we blocked it through several times with a penterfinder and then we did three takes, this was the third one.

Mostly I'm very happy with it, obviously theres things I wish id done better, I wish id panned more to the right as I actually walked in to the post office door, I asked to go again but wasn't allowed….

hope you enjoy….

Wan,

Nice stuff for one rehearsal and not really knowing exactly what's gonna happen. That's a tough one for sure not to mention that you're also dealing with being on a stage and everything else that's going on. Cool that they played you're shot for the whole piece! I haven't done a lot of concert stuff but the things that i have done i recall thinking halfway through "Well, I've already done every move i can think of" and then realizing that it's not about the shot as much as it is about the concert and then just doing the moves over and over again. Odd but at some point there're only so many things to be done.

Good stuff.

Danny,

Fantastic shot. Great energy, great framing, a really excellent step/walk off the horse cart. Really a great shot. Thanks so much for sharing this. Very cool, and for only three takes....I don't even know what a penterfinder is, but if it means you're going to be putting stuff like this out, keep using it. Well done.

Great Shot from Ripper Street Danny!!!

I've worked in Ireland quite a bit in the last few years on The Tudors and Vikings and know quite a few of the Ripper Street crew. I was sorry to hear that BBC pulled the plug but hopefully someone else steps up and keeps it going.

I'll throw in my 2 cents...

This video I DP'ed and operated Steadi for Chick-Fil-a was a very interesting concept: A oner going through a restaurant capturing different people, and then overlaying text with their personal situation.

In the fortune 500 world this became one of the most successful videos and copied by many other companies like Red Lobster and Dairy Queen.

On the technical side, it was a difficult shoot, as we had limited time, filming in a working restaurant. Getting the timing right with the actors that spanned from 8 to 80 years old wasn't that simple either, but all in all I think it turned out pretty good.
