Hey Brad, No, the TX output power is not selectable, though range can be increased or decreased using different antennas. I'm curious to see a test of how it works through some walls. Is the reception better than the Bolt Pro through walls or obstrucions over a short distance? Can you post a demo or test of this? As Steadicam users, most of the time distance is not an issue. Most often I am within a 100' of the receiver.The receiver is left in the hands of a second AC or DIT and often parked at video village or the DIT station and that is where we run into reception problems. Hey Lawrence, This is a very rough video I took on my phone at the Band Pro Open House in Los Angeles a couple of weeks back. It shows a Bolt Pro 2000 going through a large crowd and then a few walls once inside the building (the TX is on the stabilizer at the beginning). There is only one brief disconnect at the very back of the facility. System linked up quickly <10 seconds. Had rx in 3rd floor of an apt building with tx on the street. Going downstairs and onto street system never broke up, no noise or artifacts. It just worked seamlessly. Didn't get a chance to test the full range for distance. We were also filming under elevated subway line in Williamsburg around Hewes and Broadway- any op in NYC knows this location. At times there was 200-300 yards between tx & rx -with plenty of bodies I between- again no issues or break ups. Not a scientific test and there wasn't another system there to do a side by side but in a real word application the system preformed perfectly and without any issue of announce. The size of the system is great for us and the rx is equally at home in a village build or as handheld setup. The design, machining and layout are smart and well done. Have been a happy bolt pro owner. Now I'm grinning ear to ear with the bolt 2000 but even better so were the DP & Director. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Nick Parker Posted January 22, 2014 Report Share Posted January 22, 2014 Hi, I wanted to share with the forum our success with the Bolt Pro 2000. We have several reality shows running at any one time and own 5 boxx wireless systems. I took a big risk and purchased 4 Bolt Pro 2000's on the promise they would preform. That they did! Running in a studio for 15 hour days for 5 days in a row. They were built on an antenna array for 3 of the links and ran another in a long range scenario. The studio environment had its own challenges we had about 5 inner walls of timber flats to get through. Placing the antennas on the side of stage without any line of sight proved to work seamless. The 4th link was run between a space of about 400 feet between a solid concrete wall with only a door opening allowing rf through. Once again not a single drop out and perfect the whole time. All 4 systems were running at the same time and we didn't ever have any issues getting the 4 working in the same space. Now... one point that hopefully will be fixed in the future... we shoot long long days and the biggest issue for us is if you do a battery change on the camera you need to reset the power on the receiver also. This was the only real pain when working in this environment it required the camera assistants to pull down the receiver tower and individually power cycle the appropriate link. It would be great if you could connect via USB and make the link stay on the frequency its on and remove the need for the searching all together... an advanced user option perhaps? One other thing we noted was sometimes if a power down occurred on say link 1 and the 3 other links were powered it would take some time to find its receiver. Not a huge one either however the 'searching' screen appears to be in a 720p format meaning the vision switcher won't show 'searching' while waiting to lock up and not giving a director a confidence that its patched correctly and just waiting for its buddy. We have since purchased some wireless power points for the iphone to control to help the camera assistants re power from the studio floor without the need to walk back to the receivers. Teradek, you have created a boxx killer.... at this price and the quality of the product wow.. we are going to throw our external Boxx antenna's on the receivers and see how much further we can go with this however we haven't even had a need to yet! For camera Control? In the live world, we need something more affordable than what's currently the gold standard for the smaller stations, or even the big stations that want to go wireless in their studios. Something where a small transmitter unit would be connected to the output of the video control panel and send control signals for shading, Iris, and Tally back to the camera. Unlike the original bolt, the 2000 pro reciever has a little on/off switch in the indent opposite the antennas. Apparently several people have been stumped by the change.
