How does MK-V fit into this, do they use the patent or pay for it?

Well Howard has never paid anything. He's only ripped Lynn off and claims that HE has a patent on the MK-V AR and when pressed for patent numbers he will never cite them. A patent search also shows no Patents for Howard Smith or MK-V. There is a Howard Smith with two patents but he's a doctor and it's for medical devices.

I remember searching for some information and got few hits with "Howard James Smith", "Howard J Smith" and "Howard Smith".

Here's one about the roll cage but it's an application only, maybe a further clicking would tell if it's granted: https://www.google.com/patents/US20050167558?hl=fi&cl=en

You can click the name of the inventor and you'll get further documents.

I sure woulnd't want to be the patent clerk reading the dusty papers in a cellar and examine the drawings with a magnifying glass.. 9 hours a day..

You give me too much credit, lol. I should have been more clear: The one that I made was only a few hundred dollars. I own a 3 axis cnc mill btw and only had to make a small plate to interface between the motor and camera mount. And for years i've been telling my wife my browsing the internet is precious R&D, at least to the tune of $100,000..

Keeping horizon with a motor is no longer a big deal or a technological feat in 2014. ANYONE can do it.

Here's 3 axes of 32 bit stabilization for $300. http://aerialpixels.com/shop/gimbals/alexmos-32bit-3-axis-brushless-gimbal-controller-basecam/

I look forward to seeing your version.

PS this post is worth at least $72

Howard's "Patent" is an application he doesn't have a patent as he claims, and he's been making quite a few claims of gear he's developed that he hasn't including taking credit for "inventing" the BarTech

Thank you Eric for the post, interesting stuff to read for sure.

Just a thought that came to my mind;

What I really like about the society of science is the sharing the knowledge so that they can combine their thoughts to create something better from what used to be good. I think it's all natural to adopt ideas and develope them but anyone who does it in unjust way will have their lesson eventually. And as long as it's about money and glory I cannot see an end of it.

There is a reason why people who planted an idea are celebrated but not the ones who took em to action. The idea is _usually_ better. But when you give it to the masses they'll digest it and it'll lose the sharp edges and turn out - well, success or a disaster - but the individual behind the idea will be remembered.

Tomorrow I may disagree.

Let's not go sucking each others d&&ks just yet. (little ones, according to Jessica Lopez) We move a camera around on a stick held by springs. There are people that operate on babies in utero. People that went to the moon.

Calling this "science" is high schooly at best. Don't let the oohs and ahhs from the p.a.'s when you undock go to your head.

This may be the Summer Shandy speaking,

Tomorrow, I might make an AR.

15 that is, not revolution.

Abad,

My intend was to use those words as a metaphor. I'm sorry I couldn't make my point clear.

And yes I think there is something like science involved because of the physics behind GB's invention.

First of all, comparing real life feats of science to movie work is like comparing apples to stove bolts. I saved a woman's life once using manual C.P.R., when I was an E.M.T. Does that have anything to do with cinematography? Of course not.

Indeed, science is in the air every time we operate.

We are subservient to Newton's Threee Laws of Motion.

What I was comparing was skill sets. Apples and stove bolts are 2 different things. But, owning and operating an apple orchard and owning and operating a stove bolt company are similar. You source supplies, make the best product you can, and sell it.

Just as pulling the emergency release on the vest does not make you a Steadicam operator, nor does performing cpr make you a doctor. These are individual procedures that can be taught in minutes. Versus a career in medicine or Steadicam operating or violin playing whereas you only get better, learn more, with every time you do it.

Yes, Science is in the air every time we operate, but not on set. I would say 95% of crew would be hard pressed to define most of those terms. How many directors/dp's have you had to explain to how shadows work? How reflections work? How many times have you been asked about the gyros? I had a grip ask me once " how does your crane balance like that?"

Understand that we now live in a world where the user of a piece of equipment has little to no knowledge of how it works. Peter, how many times have you alcohol swabbed the drum on a VTR? How many mags have you loaded? How many cables have you made? You must have adjusted Gamma with a tweaker on a camera at some point. Required a Steadimag because the weight displacement of a 400' take?

Now, when was the last time you saw a DP open up an F55? I mean, removing the media from the camera does not even alter its balance in any significant way. And more importantly, the DP has NO IDEA what is going on inside the camera. NONE.

A film camera had a motor, that turned a spool of film, while also pulling it down with a claw, pausing briefly, exposing it to light, and so on. Nowadays, Ask a DP "How does your Epic work?" But don't do it while he is updating the firmware, because it could brick the camera.

"Film" making was artisan, now it is mostly pedestrian.

If we are going to post diagrams . let's not overwhelm.....

Fortunately I have a firm grasp of reality ;I never claimed to be a doctor. You have succeeded brilliantly in disrespecting a highly complex skill by comparing it with yanking a piece of rope.

Congratulations.

And so we are all very clear this has nothing to do with stealing other people's ideas.
